Borrowing privileges for staff
The details on this page relate to borrowing from the General Collection. Different rules apply to borrowing from the Reserve Collection.
Contents
How many items can I borrow at one time?
Both academic and general staff can borrow up to 50 items from the General Collection and two items at a time from the Reserve Collection.
How long can I have them?
For academic staff, the regular loan period is 91 days, subject to recall. The equivalent figure for general staff is 28 days. If requested by another borrower, the minimum loan period is 14 days.
Reserve Collection items are due one hour after the time of borrowing. If borrowed after 4.00 pm, a Reserve Collection item is due when the Library next opens.
Can I renew loans?
Under normal circumstances, items can be renewed five times, after which they must be returned. Items which have been requested by another borrower cannot be renewed. For information on online renewals, see the page on borrowing.
What happens if I am late returning an item?
The fine for the late return of recalled items is $2.00 per day. The fine for overdue Reserve Collection items is 50c per hour. Billing Letters are issued for long overdue material (material that is 42 days overdue) and the replacement cost for such items is $100.00 per item. This charge has two components: a $90.00 charge and a $10.00 processing fee. These charges become part of the accumulated fines total. On return of the long overdue item the $90.00 charge is automatically removed from the fines record. The $10.00 processing fee per item remains.
Borrowing privileges will be withdrawn until all fines are paid if your accumulated fines reach a total of $200.00 (academic staff) or $100 (general staff).
Fines can be paid at any time throughout the year at the Service Desk on the Ground Floor of Dixson Library.
All items are subject to recall. As a recalled book has its loan period cut short, you should read all mail received from the Library, as the fines for ignoring a recall are heavy.
Closed collection retrieval
Items in Monograph Storage and from the Special Collections (such as the New England Collection) must be retrieved by Library staff. Such Stacks items must be requested in advance using the Closed Collection Retrieval Request form.
Items requested by 2.00 pm, Monday to Friday are available for use by 3.00 pm on the same day (excluding Public Holidays). Items required on weekends must be requested before 2.00 pm the preceding Friday.
Only books from the Storage Collection may be borrowed. Other items are for use in the Library only.
You will be notified if your request cannot be fulfilled.
Items from Stacks will be held for seven (7) days at the Service Desk.
You can confirm that your request is available for collection by calling (02) 6773 2458 or extn 2458.
