How to make a subject search request

Requests for subject searches can be made by:

What is a subject search?

If you have available Web access, you can usually get the best results by doing the search yourself in the library catalogue and journal databases. Where you are having difficulty or do not have Web access, you can request librarians to perform a subject search on your behalf.

Please note that subject searches are free and only available to external students.

What should be included in a request?

Include with your request:

  • your daytime telephone number

  • your UNE email address (if you are happy to receive search results by email)

  • the relevant unit (eg POLS 206/306)

  • the date by which the material should be in the post (please note that you should allow a minimum turn-around time of at least a week)

  • the reason why you need the material (Is it an essay? If so, how long is the essay?)

  • please provide details of the topic. These should include keywords and whether the focus is Australian or international

  • the desired currency of the material (eg last 5 years, last 2 years)

  • anything else that might help the person performing the subject search.

What will I receive?

In most cases, we will send you books from the Library’s collection, a relevant search strategy or a list of journal articles. If you recieve a list of references, you can request copies of the articles that you feel best meet your needs.

Why doesn’t the library just send me the articles?

Copyright regulations prevent us from choosing articles and copying them for you.
