Borrowing privileges for external students

How do I make a loan request?

Loans can be requested by means of Web-based forms (you can also use the same forms order photocopies or request a subject search).

If you have problems using the Web-based forms, there is an alternative.

What items are available for external loan?

External students are able to borrow the same material as internal students, such as books, videos, DVDs, software and other items from the General Collection.

We are, however, unable to send books from closed collections such as the New England Collection and the Reserve Collection. Most books held in the Reserve are available in multiple copies from the General Collection.

Please don’t rely on the Library to supply the prescribed texts for your unit, as we often only purchase one copy of each prescribed text.

Loan periods differ according to your level of study. More information is available here.

What is the turnaround time?

If the book you require is available for loan, we will despatch it within two working days.

Recalled Items

ALL items are subject to recall. That is, if another borrower requires an item, your loan period is reduced to 14 days and you will not be able to renew it. Please read all emails received from the Library, as fines for ignoring a recall are heavy.

Returning items

Postal returns

Important note: Borrowed materials returned to the Library by post remain the responsibility of the borrower until they are received by the Library. Items sent by regular post carry a minor risk of being lost or misplaced in handling before they reach the Library. Borrowers who are not willing to accept this risk should use registered post.

External students can return books and other borrowed items by ordinary mail. The postal address for all returns is:

Dixson Library
University of New England NSW 2351

Please note that you should make every effort to ensure that items reach the Library by the due date.

During Residential Schools

Items can also be returned in person. When the University Library is open, items should be placed in the return chutes near the Service Desk. After hours, students should use the chute beside University Library's front door. Loans can also be returned at the Law Library.

Handle with care

Please help to conserve the collection. Take care to wrap books securely for despatch. Where possible use padded bags or bubble wrap to ensure that items survive the journey back to the Library.

Fines

Late returns and renewals will attract fines. For more information see the fines page.
