Borrowing privileges for external students

The details on this page relate to borrowing from the General Collection. Different rules apply to borrowing from the Reserve Collection.

Undergraduate students

Undergraduate students can borrow up to 12 items at one time and up to 2 items from the Reserve Collection when on campus.

The regular loan period for undergraduate students is 21 days, subject to recall. If an item is recalled, the minimum loan period is 14 days.

Items can be renewed twice, after which they must be returned. Items which have been requested by another borrower cannot be renewed. Please refer to the renewals page for instructions on renewing loans online.

Graduate students

This group includes all postgraduate non-higher degree students. You can borrow up to 20 items at one time and up to 2 Reserve Collection items when on campus.

The loan period for this category of students is 28 days. However, this loan period may be shortened to 14 days if the item concerned is requested by another borrower.

Graduate students are limited to three (3) renewals on any one loan. Items cannot be renewed if the item has been requested by another borrower.

Higher degree students

This category includes all UNE students enrolled in MLitt, Masters Prelim, Masters, PhD Prelim and PhD courses. You can borrow up to 50 items at one time and up to 2 Reserve Collection items when on campus.

The regular loan period for higher degree students is 91 days. However, this loan period may be shortened to 14 days if the item concerned is requested by another borrower.

Higher degree students are limited to five (5) renewals on any one loan. Items cannot be renewed if another borrower has requested the item.

Fines and charges

There is a grace period to allow for postal delays. After that, the fine for the late renewal or return of an item is $1.00 for each day it is overdue. The fine for late recalled items is $2.00 per day. The fine for late renewal or return of Reserve items is 50 cents per hour.

Please read this important note about returning books and other items by post.

Fines can be paid in person by credit card, EFTPOS, cheque or cash at the Dixson Library Service Desk, or by mail, or by emailing your credit card details to the Loans Coordinator. Please make cheques payable to the University of New England.

You can email the Loans Coordinator at libloans@une.edu.au with the following credit card details:

  • your student number
  • cardholder's name
  • card type (Mastercard or VISA)
  • card number
  • card expiry date
  • the amount to be paid
  • Long overdue items

Items that are 42 days overdue are classed as long overdue items. Billing Letters are issued for this material and students are charged a replacement cost of $100.00 per item. This charge has two components: a $90.00 replacement charge and a $10.00 processing fee. These charges become part of the accumulated fines total. If a long overdue item is returned, the $90.00 replacement charge is cancelled. However, the $10.00 processing fee per item remains.

    Withdrawal of borrowing privileges

If your accumulated fines (or charges for long overdue items) reach a total of $200.00, your borrowing privileges will be withdrawn until all fines are paid.

Please note that exceeding this limit will have other consequences: you will be unable to re-enroll, request a copy of your academic transcript or graduate.

    Recalls reminder

All items are subject to recall. As a recalled item may have its original loan period reduced, borrowers should read all mail received from the Library, as the fines for ignoring a recall are heavy.
