Borrowing privileges for special borrowers

There are many categories of Special Borrower. What follows relates to ordinary Special Borrowers (members of the general community who have paid an annual fee and non-UNE students).

Borrowing privileges

Special Borrowers can borrow up to 12 items at one time.

The regular loan period for in-person Special Borrowers is 14 days. The loan period for Special Borrowers from a distance is 21 days, subject to recall. If an item is requested by another borrower, the minimum loan period is 14 days.

Items can be renewed twice, after which they must be returned. Items which have been recalled cannot be renewed. Please refer to renewals  for instructions on how to renew your loans. To arrange a Password for online renewals please contact the Dixson Library Service Desk on 02 6773 2458.

Borrowing privileges for other categories of Special Borrower are generally the same as for their equivalents among UNE staff and students (for example, Higher Degree Special Borrowers have the same privileges as local Higher Degree students).

For further information, see the pages on borrowing privileges for local students, external students and academic staff.

What are the fines and charges?

The fine for the late renewal or return of items is $1.00 for each day they are overdue. The fine for late recalled items is $2.00 per day.

Fines can be paid by Eftpos, cheque, credit card or cash at the Service Desk, Ground Floor of Dixson Library, or by mail. The postal address is:

Please make cheques payable to the University of New England.

Long overdue items

Items that are 42 days overdue are classed as long overdue items. Billing Letters are issued for this material and you are charged a replacement cost of $100.00 per item. This charge has two components: a $90.00 replacement charge and a $10.00 processing fee. These charges become part of the accumulated fines total. If a long overdue item is returned, the $90.00 replacement charge is cancelled. However, the $10.00 processing fee per item remains.

Withdrawal of borrowing privileges

If your accumulated fines reach a total of $20.00 (in person Special Borrowers) or $100 (Special Borrowers at a distance), your borrowing privileges will be withdrawn until all fines are paid.

Recalls reminder

All items are subject to recall. As a recalled book may have its loan period cut short, Special Borrowers should read all mail received from the University Library, as the fines for ignoring a recall are heavy.

Inter library loans for special borrowers (Document Delivery)

Special Borrowers can make use of the Document Delivery services of the Library. In practice, this means that you have access to material held in academic and special libraries throughout Australia and the world. You can order photocopies of journal articles and book chapters as well as borrow individual items from other libraries.

Special Borrowers pay the same charges for Inter Library material as UNE staff and Honours Students.

The standard charge for items from within Australia is $13.20 (inc GST). Inquiries regarding the charge of loans from overseas and thesis copies can be made with the staff of Document Services on 02 6773 3473.

For more information on ordering items, see the page on Document Delivery for Local Students.
