English 351 Victorian literature and Culture
This Subject Guide will help you to find information in your subject area.
Recommended Readings
Begin by looking for any books or journal articles recommended by your lecturers or tutors. Some of these may be in the Reserve Collection.You can find Reserve Collection items by searching the University Library catalogue. Click on the Reserve search and select either Course ID or Instructor from the drop-down box. Type in unit name eg engl 351 or your lecturers surname eg McDonnell to see the lists of items and their Call numbers.
The Online Catalogue
If you know an item exists, search for it in the online catalogue to see if it is held in the UNE Libraries. The best way to search for a known item in the catalogue is by author or title. Choose a Basic Search in the web-based catalogue.If you have a general area of interest but don't know the name of a specific book, try a subject search in the Online Catalogue using the Subject option to find library resources about particular topics.
The library uses standardised subject headings: for correct headings consult the large red volumes of Library of Congress Subject Headings near the Online Catalogue terminals on the ground floor of The UNE Library or contact the Information Desk on 02 6773 2458.

If you don't know a specific subject area, you can keyword search the online catalogue. Choose combination search and enter some key words pertaining to your specific topic.
To find works by a particular author, try an Author search e.g. Eliot, George. To find critical or biographical information about an author and his/her works, do a Subject search such as Dickens, C.
Reference Collection
Here you can find dictionaries, encyclopaedias, bibliographies and other ready reference tools which will help you to clarify terms and find background information for your assignment topics. Journals
Journal articles are not listed individually in the Online Catalogue. Use indexes or abstracts in print, CD-ROM, or in online form to find out what articles have been published about your topic. Then check in the Online Catalogue by doing a Title search for the journal title to see if the library holds the journal volumes cited. To find out Dixson Library's journals holdings for a particular topic, try a subject search such as english literature - periodicals.Databases (Indexes and Abstracts)
These give references to articles, reviews, chapters, and papers which appear in journals (also known as periodicals, serials or magazines), books, reports, and conference proceedings. Many of the journal indexes are available online. Go to the UNE Libraries page and select an option from the Databases drop-down menu.Please note, to access the e-resources you will need to have a UNE username and password.
