The UNE Library Online Catalogue

Look here to find books, ebooks, journals, ejournals, dvds and all research materials held at UNE.

If you already have the details of a book, type the title or author into the Library Catalogue search box on the library home page.  Choose "Title" or "Author" from the pull-down menu.

The best way to find library resources about a particular topic is to use the Keyword search. (Help is here)

You can also use a Subject search to find library resources about particular topics. Libraries use standardised subject headings. For correct headings consult the large red volumes of Library of Congress Subject Headings near the Reference Collection on the ground floor of Dixson Library or contact the Service Desk on 02 6773 2458.

Some suggestions for useful subject searches for English are:

australian literature

children's literature - english

dramatists

english literature -
periodicals

english literature -
20th century

english literature - history and criticism

poetry modern

motion pictures

motion picture industry

cinematography

shakespeare, william

austen, jane

Other Subject headings you may find useful for your assignment are:

Austen, Jane. Pride and prejudice
Shakespeare, William, 1564-1616. Othello
Shakespeare, William, 1564-1616. Sonnets
Sonnets, English - History and criticism

To find works by a particular author, try an Author search e.g. shakespeare william. To find critical or biographical information about an author and his/her works, do a Subject search such as austen jane.

Finding journal articles for your assignment

To find articles you need to use a journal index database. You can search using relevant keywords and you will be given a list of articles containing the following information.  The titles of articles, authors, and (most importantly) the source — journal title, year, volume number, issue number and pages

The databases provide either an abstract (a short summary of the topics covered) or subject descriptors so that you can judge if an article is going to be useful to you. Increasingly indexes are also providing the article itself, online in full-text.

If you find an article that is not available online in full-text, then try a Journal Title search in the catalogue to see if UNE holds the journal you want in print or online in another database. More details about how to find journals in the catalogue are here.

The Research guide for English & Literature has a long list of all the Recommended and Useful databases.

Journal databases recommended for ENGL101

The following databases have many articles relevant to your assignment.

JSTOR

This database contains hundreds of literary journals in full-text going back to their first issue (but not the most recent volumes).

  • Choose JSTOR from the list of Recommended databases and click on the Advanced search link.
  • Enter your UNE username/password when prompted.
  • In the first search box type jane austen and in the second type "pride and prejudice". Quotes make the search terms a full phrase.
  • Take the tick off the box next to Search for links to articles outside of JSTOR.
  • You can also limit your search Type by ticking the box next to Article and further down the screen limit the Discipline to Language and Literature.
  • When you click the Search button you will see the results of your search.
  • You can use similar searches for william shakespeare AND othello or william shakespeare AND sonnets
  • You can print or save each article or mark several citations and email the list. Check JSTOR Help if you want to know more.

GALE Databases - containing Literature Resource Centre

  • Choose Gale Databases from the list of Recommended databases.
  • Enter your UNE username/password when prompted.
  • Click on the Continue button.
  • In the first search box, change the Keyword search to Person-by or About and type shakespeare.
In the second search box use Name of Work and type othello.
  • When you click the blue Search button you will see a list of results for Literature Criticism.
  • Click on the purple tabs if you want to see these results separated into Biographies, Topic & Work Overviews, and so on.
  • If there are too many results go back to the previous page. Choose Keyword as your search type on the third row and add a keyword, like iago.
  • For Sonnet 73 try sonnet as Name of Work and shakespeare as Person-by or About. There are not many results so it is not really necessary to add 73 as a Keyword.
  • You can mark records and print/save/email your results.

ProQuest - Contains many journals on a wide range of subjects including literature

ProQuest is similar to the Gale Databases in that it contains a variety of different subject databases with a lot of full-text magazines and journals.

  • Choose ProQuest from the list of Recommended databases.
  • Enter your UNE username/password when prompted.
  • In the first search box type william shakespeare and in the second one type othello
  • Tick the box to limit your search to Scholarly journals, including peer-reviewed and click the Search button.
  • You will see your results listed and whether or not they are available online.
  • You can mark your records so you can then print/save/email the list.
  • If an article you want is not available online then use the Find it button or look directly in the catalogue to see if the journal is held in print or online in another database.
