EDEE 112 Short Essay

The field of language and literacy as relevant to the primary school curriculum and classroom.

You will need to think about, and read relevant material on your essay topic. Looking for information on your topic is a good way to investigate the various types of resources held in the UNE University Library.

Relevant material held falls into a number of categories:
Reference books, like encyclopedias and dictionaries, both in paper and online;
Journal articles in electronic form and in paper; and
Scanned material placed in e-reserve books discussing your topic;

The Curriculum Resources Collection

This is a special collection held by the University Library for education students. It consists of school level material, including syllabus documents and practical teaching texts.

All material in the Collection is available for loan and can be taken on student teaching placements. Items in the Collection have call numbers with a CR preface.

Location: The Collection is located on the first floor of the Library, across from the 300s.

You can also do a Keyword search in the online catalogue: Click 'Keyword' in the Black banner at the top of the screen.

Enter in the second box, and enter in the third box. Click 'Search'

Books can be in a number of places in the Dixson Library, all with a similar call numbers. Locations include: the Curriculum Resources Collection referred to above, the Reserve Collection (ground floor adjacent to the Service Desk), the Reference Collection (not for loan material on the ground floor), and the general lending collections on the upper floors of the library. In addition to this, paper journals specifically devoted to this subject will also be found in either Current Serials or among the bound journals on the appropriate floor of the library.

Database Search Strategies to Help You Find Information

More information can be found by using online databases that link you to relevant articles.

A+ Education is a useful database for finding information on education topics with an Australian focus. Follow these steps to find information in this database:
Go to the University Library page .
Click on the 'Research Guides' link under the Training and Help’ column. Click ‘Education’ on the next page, and then A+ Education on the next following page. Enter your UNE username and password when prompted.
Once you are on the Informit website, type < language and literacy’> in the first 'Search Query' box.
Type < primary education and curriculum > in the second search box.
Tick the box marked 'Full Content Records Only' (full text) if you wish.
Tick the Date Range box and change the dates if you want to limit the date range.
Click 'search'.
If you select a date range 1995-2009 and click ‘Full content records only’, you should get more than 60 articles you can download or read on the screen.
To view an article, click on the 'Full Text' link beneath the citation. You may read it online, or use the retrieval choices to print or save a copy.
Click on the 'Logout' button at the top right of the Informit screen to finish.

Proquest is a good general database with a lot of full text content that you can use to search for information as well. Remember that it is American in origin, so you will need to use ‘elementary education’ as one of your keywords rather than ‘primary education’.

Go to the UNE University Library page
Click on the 'Find Resources' tab at the top of the page. Select ProQuest from the 'Most Popular Databases' list on the left.
Enter your UNE username and password when prompted.
Type < language and literacy > in the first search box.
Type in the second search box.
Type < curriculum > in the third search box.
Mark the box next to 'Full text documents only'.
Marking the box for 'Scholarly journals, including peer reviewed' will ensure that your results are from academic sources only.
Click on the 'Search' button.

ProQuest will present you with a list of matching articles.
To view an article from the list given, click on the article title or a format icon.
To print an article, you must be viewing the article contents as Full Text, Page Impage - PDF or as Text + Graphics.

eReserve Material

Material placed in eReserve is scanned and made available electronically. You will find a number of relevant readings in eReserve for EDEE 112. eReserve can be accessed via the Library home page, click 'eReserve' under the 'Find Resources' column,
or via the My Library tab in MyUNE, click ‘Click here to access eReserve items'.
