Marketing and Management

This Subject Guide will help you to find information in your subject area.

Recommended readings

Begin by looking for any books or journal articles recommended by your lecturers or tutors. Some of these will be in the Reserve Collection. You can find Reserve Collection items by searching the UNE Library catalogue. Click on the Reserve search and select either Course ID or Instructor from the drop-down box. Type in MM 200 or MM 205-305 or Hunter J to see the lists of items and their Call numbers.

UNE Library Catalogue

The catalogue tells you the books, videos and journals (both print and online) that are held here at UNE. To find library resources about particular topics try a Subject search in the catalogue by choosing Subject from the pull-down menu on the Browse screen. Remember that libraries use standardised subject headings. For correct headings see DRA's website or consult the large red volumes of Library of Congress Subject Headings near the catalogue terminals on the ground floor of Dixson Library. You can also contact the Information Desk on 02 6773 2458.

Journals

Use either a Browse: Title or a Browse: Journal Title search in the catalogue to look for journals held at UNE. Journals may be held in either paper or online (electronic) format. If a journal is provided electronically, this is indicated by the words [electronic resource] or [internet access] after the name of the journal. In most cases these online journals are paid for by the University Library and access is restricted to UNE staff and students. A UNE username and password prompt will appear once you click on the linked URL (web Address or Location) in the catalogue.

Here is an example of how an online journal looks in the catalogue when the URLs are displayed:

Journal records in the Library Catalogue

This is saying that European journal of marketing is available online in full-text in Emerald and ProQuest. Click on the URL in the catalogue to go directly to each index or use the Most Popular Databases list on the Resources page. Please note that not all issues of a journal are necessarily available online since individual publishing contracts vary.

To find out which journals the University Library holds about a broad topic, try a Subject search using a subject such as management - periodicals or marketing - periodicals.

Journal articles are not listed individually in the catalogue. Use journal indexes or abstracting tools (which may be in print, CD-ROM or online form) to find your references. The quickest way is to search an index online to find out what articles have been published about your topic — below are listed those journal indexes which will be of greatest use to you.

What can you do if you have found a reference to an article which seems useful but is not available online in full-text? Check for the name of the journal in the UNE Library catalogue as it may be available in print or online in a different package.

Journal databases (indexes)

These give references to articles, reviews, chapters, and papers which appear in journals, books, reports, and conference proceedings. Journals are also known as periodicals, serials or magazines. Many of the journal indexes are available online. Go to the University Library page and click on the Resources tab.

Please note, to access the e-resources you will need to have a UNE username and password. Full instructions are here.

Try the New England Business School Recommended databases page, select from the Most popular databases page, or use tools to search the World Wide Web. There are also guides for using the indexes.

To find out how to find information for your assignments, how to use indexes, how to cite your references or write an essay, try eSKILLS UNE.

Materials below marked with an * are available on CD-ROM (Compact Disk) on the Stand-Alone computers in Dixson Library — ask at the Information Desk for more details.
