If you are applying for a grant, a promotion or a new position, include metrics to demonstrate the impact of your research. Citation analysis is the most widely accepted indicator of quality and impact. The metrics most commonly used are:
Citation counts: the total and/or average number of times your publications have been cited.
- Web of Science: view the tutorial.
- Scopus: view the tutorial.
- Google Scholar.
h-index: a single-number metric of impact, combining both quality and quantity. Based on the set of your most cited papers and the number of citations that you have received in the papers published by other researchers. A researcher with an index of h has published h papers each of which has been cited by others at least h times. Use these tools to determine your h-index.
- Web of Science: view the tutorial on citation reporting and the h-index.
- Scopus: watch the 4 min. video on how to calculate your h-index.
- Publish or Perish is free, downloadable software that processes Google Scholar data into bibliometric measures including the h-index.
As each of these databases uses different sources, you may need to search them all to find your publications. Coverage varies depending on discipline.
Maximise your research impact
There are a number of ways to maximise your research impact. These include:
- Register for a Researcher ID on Web of Science
- Read about the Scopus Author identifier and access it from the Scopus Author search tab.
- Join the Community of Scholars at CoS Scholar Universe.
- Increase visibility of your research by contributing to e-publications@UNE and publishing in Open Access Journals.
Guides to measuring and maximising impact
- Bibliometrics: a Macquarie University guide to evaluating journals and to measure the impact of a publication.
- Measuring research impact: a QUT guide providing tools and information to assist with measuring and monitoring research impact.
- Measuring your research impact (MYRI): an online tutorial produced by Irish universities that introduces you to citation analysis and tracking research impact.
- Citation tracking: a UNE eSKILLS Plus tutorial on citation tracking.
