Computers
There are more than fifty computers available for student use in the Learning Commons. These machines are accessed on a "first-come, first-served" basis.
In addition, there five express terminals and numerous stations for laptop users. The Learning Commons has wireless access, although coverage is not complete due to shape of the building.
All computers in the Learning Commons are connected to the Web and run Windows Vista. The following software is standard:
- Microsoft Office 2007 (Word, Excel, Publisher, Picture Manager, Access)
- Internet Explorer 7.0
- Mozilla Firefox 2.0
- SPSS Statistics 17.0*
- DVD CD Burning Software
- Power DVD DX
- Turing Connection
- DrvMap**
- Google Earth
* Allows connection to user files on Metz. Requires UNE username/password logon.
** The R statistical package is also installed on the Training Lab machines.
Language support for Commons machines includes: Arablic, Chinese (PRC, Singapore), Indonesian, Malaysian, Thai. Many other Asia and European scripts supported.
Note that the 16 machines in the Training Lab are also available for student use when the room is not used for training.
Colour and B/W printing is available, as are facilities for colour and B/W scanning of documents. It is also possible to scan and email documents from most of the Multi-Function Devices (MFDs) in the Commons and elsewhere in the Library.
Additional computers for student use are on the First and Second floors. These computers are networked and print to MFDs and printers across the campus. Printing and copying is by means of the University's swipe card system.
