Lifelong learning

The benefits of lifelong learning

One of the essential attributes of a UNE graduate is to be prepared for lifelong learning in pursuit of personal and professional development. Read our UNE Graduate Attributes Policy.

Some identified benefits of lifelong learning are:

  • personal competence and fulfilment
  • greater personal economic security
  • national prosperity through a well-skilled workforce
  • increased social cohesion and tolerance
  • increased participation in the life of the community.

Lifelong learning is vital if you are to keep gaining the knowledge and skills needed to adapt and prosper in our rapidly changing world. For more information on lifelong learning see:

MIT OpenCourseWare

Free course materials are becoming a valuable and free way of continuing your own education. MIT OpenCourseWare is a free publication of MIT course materials that reflects almost all the undergraduate and graduate subjects taught at MIT.

Or go to the OpenCourseWare Consortium to find freely available courses from other universities.

Information literacy

Information literacy, the ability to find, evaluate and use information, is essential for successful lifelong learning.

In September 2003 the Information Literacy Meeting of Experts from 23 countries developed the Prague Declaration: Towards an Information Literate Society. This outlines basic information literacy principles and their importance today in the Information Society.

Working through eSKILLS UNE helps to acquire some basic information literacy skills. Keep updating these skills as your needs change and the information environment evolves. More advanced information skills are covered in eSKILLS Plus.
