Installing EndNote

All UNE staff, higher degree, postgraduate and Honours students (including those enrolled in LS 400, RUSC 490, NR 490 and GEPL 455) are entitled to a copy of EndNote.

The latest version currently available at UNE is EndNote X4 for both Macs and Windows computers. EndNote X4 is now compatible with both the 32 bit and 64 bit version of Word 2010. There is a Word 2011 update available for Macintosh X4 users. Check here for the latest news on EndNote X4 and Word.

Where can I access the software?

UNE staff and higher degree students can access EndNote by direct download from the IT site. There are two directories, one for Win (Windows) and one for OSX (Macintosh).

If you are an Honours student, you can obtain your copy through the UNE IT Service Desk on the Ground Floor of Dixson Library. Visit the Service Desk in person or ask for EndNote to be sent to you. You will need to provide your:

  • full name and home address
  • student number
  • computer's operating system, eg Windows 7, XP, Vista etc or Macintosh OS 10+.

The IT Service Desk email is servicedesk@une.edu.au and the telephone number is (02) 6773 5000 (extn 5000 on campus).

If you have an installation CD, follow the instructions below for installing EndNote on computers with Windows or Macintosh OS X.

Upgrading your EndNote version?

If you are upgrading EndNote, it is recommended that you uninstall earlier versions. Remember to backup any styles, import filters and connection files that you don't want overwritten before uninstalling the old version.

You should also save your EndNote Library of references and Data Folder, so your Groups, Journal Term Lists and PDF articles attached to references do not disappear. The easiest way to do this is to use the Compressed Library function (advice provided by UQ).

Installing Endnote using a CD: Windows version

If you are upgrading EndNote, firstly uninstall earlier versions using the Add or Remove Programs utility in the Control Panel. Remember to backup your files before removing the program, by using the Compressed Library function as noted above.

When you place the EndNote CD in the CD drive, it should automatically start-up and display a Welcome to EndNote window. Three buttons are displayed in this window:

  • Install EndNote: Clicking on this button installs EndNote.
  • View Readme: This outlines the licence conditions which apply to your use of the product, together with release notes and contact information.
  • Browse CD: This allows you to view the files on the EndNote CD individually.

To install EndNote:

  • Click on the Install EndNote button.
  • Accept the default options until the message EndNote successfully installed is displayed.
  • The program will be located at C:\Program Files\EndNote X4 and is accessible from Start>Programs>EndNote.

Installing Endnote with a CD: Mac OSX Version

If you already have an EndNote X3 folder (or older) in your Applications folder, delete it before proceeding with the new installation. If you have stored your EndNote libraries in this folder, you need to move these out of the folder before deleting it.

Backup any styles, import filters and connection files that you don't want overwritten. Also save your Data folder so your Groups, Journal Term Lists and PDF articles attached to references do not disappear. The easiest way to do this is to use the Compressed Library function (advice provided by UQ).

To install EndNote X4 on your Macintosh, follow these steps:

  • Insert the Endnote X4 CD into your Mac. A CD icon will appear on your Desktop.
  • Double-click on the CD icon: you will see an EndNote X4 folder. Leave the window with the folder icon open.
  • Now double-click on your Hard drive icon on the Desktop to display the contents of your hard drive.
  • Double-click the Applications folder to display its contents in a window
  • To install EndNote X4, move the Endnote X4 folder from your Endnote CD into the Applications folder on your hard disk. This will copy the application into the right location on your Mac and create an EndNote X4 folder in your Applications folder.
  • Close the EndNote CD window and eject the CD.
  • Double-click the Endnote X4 folder in your Applications folder and double-click on the EndNote X4 icon to start the application.
(Note: To create a shortcut to the program in your dock, simply drag the EndNote X4 icon onto the Dock).

If you have not installed EndNote before, EndNote will display a Welcome to EndNote screen.

  • Click on Next on the Welcome to EndNote screen.
  • Click on Next on the Read Me screen.
  • Click on Next on the Palm Read Me screen.
  • Click on I Accept the License Agreement and Next on the License screen.
  • Click Done on the Thank You screen.

This completes the installation.

The next screen you see will be the Get Started with EndNote X4 screen. If you are using EndNote for the first time, select Create a new EndNote library to set up your first EndNote library and to launch the program.

Folder locations

It is important to check your Folder Locations to ensure EndNote X4 has installed completely before you start using it. Otherwise you may experience problems with direct export, finding necessary filters or locating an up-to-date style.

If there have been any previous versions of Endnote installed on the computer, EndNote X4 may automatically point to folders in the previous version of Endnote even though this earlier software has been uninstalled. After installing EndNote X4, check the the folder locations by following these steps:

  • Open Endnote X4
  • Click on Edit
  • Click on Preferences
  • Click on Folder Locations.

If any of the folder locations are different from the ones listed below, click on the adjacent Select Folder button to choose the filepath to the correct folder.

  • C:\Program Files\EndNote X4\Styles
  • C:\Program Files\EndNote X4\Filters
  • C:\Program Files\EndNote X4\Connections

Find Full Text

This EndNote feature allows you to select references in your EndNote library and then tell EndNote to search for PDF copies of journal articles. If EndNote finds a matching PDF it will attach it to the reference and store the PDF in your Data folder.

  • In EndNote, go to Edit > Preferences and click on Find Full Text
  • Make sure all of the boxes are ticked. You can leave the PubMed LinkOut option blank if you are not researching biomedical topics and this will make the search  much faster.
  • In the OpenURL Path box type (or copy and paste):
    http://GR6MD6KU7C.search.serialssolutions.com
  • In the Authenticate with URL box use:
    https://ezproxy.une.edu.au/login?url=
  • Click Apply and then OK

Once your preferences are set, try the following:

  • Highlight the journal article references you want EndNote to find as PDFs.
  • Click on the Find Full Text icon on the EndNote toolbar or click on References > Find Full Text > Find Full Text
  • Login with your UNE username andpassword if asked. If a list of UNE databases appears, click the Continue button
  • A copyright message will pop up before Endnote will search for the articles
  • If you are using EndNote X3 and later versions Find Full Text appears underneath your Groups on the left hand side. You will be able to see the progress of the searches.
  • If EndNote cannot download a full-text article it may still be able to provide a URL link that you can use to download the PDF and attach it yourself to the matching reference.
  • Find Full Text only works with some of UNE's online journal databases. If you can't find an article online you can always try a Journal Title search in the catalogue and check if the journal is in another online database or available in print from the University Library.
