EndNote filters

Information about Filters

Filters allow you to import references from journal indexes or databases or any text file which includes labels or tags. These tags identify the type of information that appears in the file, such as Author (AU) or Title (TI) or Source (SO).

You need to select a filter when you import material because it shows EndNote exactly how to interpret your saved records. It does this by mapping the tagged information in each reference to the matching fields in EndNote. Because each database offered by the various information providers has its own way to organise references, there is a different filter for each one. EndNote X.1 comes with over 600 filters.

UNE's EndNote filters have been written by Library staff for databases subscribed to by the University Library. They are either not supplied by EndNote or they correct errors in existing filters various EndNote releases. Please Ask a Librarian if you have any difficulties.

If you can't find the filter you want, visit the EndNote site and checkout the 'Support and Services' area or go directly to the EndNote download site for filters.

Special Notes

  • If you click on a filter name and get gibberish on the screen, go BACK and try again, this time pressing the SHIFT key while you click the filter name.

  • You must insert the filter files in the correct folder where your copy of EndNote has been installed. Typically this will be
    C:\ProgramFiles\EndNoteX\Filters....
If you do not insert the filter correctly you will not be able to access it from the Import Manager when using EndNote.

  • The Vista operating system will not permit changes to folders located in its C\Program files folder. Click here for instructions on adding extra filters to your EndNote program folder if your computer uses Vista.
