Avoiding Fines

The Library will alert you by email  when an item is nearing the end of its loan period, when it becomes overdue and if you have incurred a fine.

It is your responsibility to return loans on time. Please check your UNE account regularly and ensure that library emails have not gone into your junk mail folder.

Fines for overdue items can accumulate quickly:

  • items from the general collection = $1.00 a day.
  • items that have been recalled by another borrower = $2.00 a day.
  • items from the open reserve = 50c an hour.

Fine notices

Overdue notices are sent when an item becomes overdue. If an item is overdue 42 days, you will be charged a $100.00 replacement cost. This includes a $90.00 replacement charge and a $10.00 processing fee. If a long overdue item is returned or replaced with a new or good quality second hand copy in acceptable condition, the $90.00 replacement charge is cancelled. However, you are still liable for the $10.00 processing fee.

Paying fines

Fines can be paid by EFTPOS, cheque, money order, credit card or cash at the Service Desk on the Ground Floor of the University Library (Dixson Library). Please make cheques or money orders payable to the University of New England.

Credit Card payments can be made over the phone 02 67732458 or by email to libloans@une.edu.au.

Distance students can pay their fines by ringing the toll-free number: 1800 059 735.

Lost or damaged items

If you lose or damage a book, the charge is $100.00 per book. If you can replace the lost or damaged item with a new or good quality second-hand copy in acceptable condition, the replacement cost of $90.00 will be waived. There is a $10.00 processing fee which must still be paid.

Penalties

Borrowing privileges may be suspended if your fines exceed $20.00. Once you have exceeded the limit, you must pay the fine in full before you will be able to borrow again. If you are blocked from borrowing you cannot borrow, place a hold or renew a loan.
