Signed Language Linguistics

Semester I 2006

A/Prof. Trevor Johnston
trevor.johnston@ling.mq.edu.au

(Education 108, 22 May 2006, 12.00 noon)

Remarks

Prof Johnston's foundational linguistic analysis of Auslan (Australian Sign Language) launched the field of signed language linguistics within Australia. He is one of the very few international-level sign researchers who is also a native signer (born to deaf, signing parents). This background informs his extensive work in Auslan grammar, lexicography and educational issues. Prof Johnston will be speaking on his newly-launched ARC investigation into some of the most problematic aspects of signed language linguistics, located at the interface of 'linguistic' and 'nonlinguistic' behaviours.
