A Web-Based Approach to Strategic Learning of Speech Acts
Semester II 2004
(A2 Lecture Theatre [Arts], 14 October 2004, 5 pm)
Abstract
The presentation will describe a federally-funded project to
determine the effects of training language learners to be
more strategic in their learning of complex speech functions
or speech acts (i.e., requests, refusals, compliments, thanks,
and apologies). The focus was on determining the effects
of training intermediate students to learn and use
pragmatic information more successfully in speaking
Japanese. A website was created with self-access modular
units for learners of Japanese, drawing largely on the
empirical literature to generate both content and strategic
suggestions (see

).
