Welcome

Welcome to the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics. We hope that you will find this site's information of interest and use to you, and we look forward to hearing from you and perhaps having you study with us. If you have any queries at all, please do not hesitate to contact the appropriate discipline.

Within the School are disciplines which have been teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students for several decades, with academic staff who have national and international reputations in their fields of expertise.

UNE is the only Australian university to provide full degree programmes in Asian and European languages and in Linguistics both to on-campus students and to externals studying part-time or full-time in distance mode anywhere in this country or overseas. The School is in the forefront of technological delivery, offering units and courses with online support to complement more conventional forms of teaching. It also has a range of exchange agreements, in Asia, Canada and  Europe, providing opportunities for in-country language study. the School prides itself on having won the 2001 Vice-Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence.

The study of languages and their associated cultures and of linguistics - the science of language - is at the very heart of what a Faculty of Arts is all about, being both an end in itself and a wonderful tool in opening up the humanities and social sciences in general.

We welcome all enquiries about undergraduate programmes, including the Bachelor of  Languages, Diploma in Modern Languages, and Bachelor of Arts, about Masters by research and by coursework (including the online MA in Applied Linguistics), and about PhD study.
