Asian Languages
ChineseIndonesianJapaneseStudents can enter at various levels according to their degree of proficiency. Undergraduate units are available for those who have no or only slight knowledge of a language, for students with an HSC or equivalent, or higher language competence. Because of our lengthy experience with distance education, Asian Languages at UNE play a significant role in ensuring equity of access to two groups of students: firstly, those who would otherwise be disadvantaged either by geographical or familial circumstances, or by employment commitments; and secondly, those entering as mature age students, who seek to overcome the disadvantages of being early school leavers. All units are 6 credit points for semester subjects and 12 credit points for full year subjects. In addition to language courses, contemporary Asian Culture subjects are offered. Almost all undergraduate units in Chinese, Indonesian and Japanese are available for internal study, full-time or part-time, as part of the Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Languages, Bachelor of Asian Studies, or other awards which also include the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma of Asian Studies. A Graduate Diploma in Humanities is offered (up to two years full-time, four years part-time), which allows graduates to incorporate undergraduate language units in their study. Every unit is available for external study. Teaching is provided through print materials and audio cassettes, with increasing use of computer-aided learning packages. An important feature of distance education at UNE is the residential school, where staff and external students meet in Armidale for a few days of intensive face-to-face teaching and assessment. Attendance at these schools is optional. External part-time students have no maximum period of study for completion of their degree. Postgraduate Study is available at MA (Coursework or Research) and PhD (Research only) level. |
