New course rules for Master of Laws by Research (LLM) in 2005
For students who enrolled before 2005:
The ‘new’ LLM on offer from 2005 is offered either by coursework or by research. To complete the LLM by research you must complete LLM600 (6 Credit points) and LLM 622 (42 credit point research unit). These two units give you the necessary 48 credit points for the award of the degree.
The ‘old’ LLM required you to complete LS599 to the value of 72 credit points. The new LLM is therefore shorter but does have one compulsory unit. LS599 is no longer a unit in the University calendar and is no longer on offer.
To complete your LLM (by research) you:
- must complete LLM600 (6 credit points);
- complete LLM622. If you have been working on a thesis for LS599 you may still submit that thesis to satisfy LLM622. The word limit for LLM622 is 40 000 words. It may be that the thesis you have worked on for a 72 Credit Point unit is already longer than that. If that is the case, please contact the unit co-ordinator of LLM622 to discuss your research progress, but you may assume that as a general rule we will not hold you to the lower word limit if you have already done substantial work for your LS599 thesis.
