LS 280 Moot Court Changes

Students who enrolled in a law degree or a combined law degree prior to 2005 have the option of continuing under the rules that applied at the time they started their studies, or transferring to the 2005 rules.

Under pre-2005 rules, students must complete 15 core units and 9 electives chosen from groups B, C and D plus LS280 Moot Court. Under the 2005 rules students must complete 16 core units, including LS480 Advanced Research, Writing and Advocacy, and 8 electives. From 2005 there are no elective groups and LS280 Moot Court will no longer be part of the degree.

The rules also have implications for the units that may be counted toward the non-law component of the combined degrees.

Before deciding whether to transfer to the new rules, or continue under the old rules, students are urged to read the information available at <http://www.une.edu.au/law/policies/llb_transitional_rules.php#2005> to make sure they understand what impact the change will have on bot the law, and non-law components of their degree

The rule changes do have a particular implication for the unit LS280 Moot Court. These are explained below:

Moot Court and the 2005 rules

Under the 2005 rules, LS280 Moot Court is not part of the degree program. Students who have completed LS280 Moot Court must understand that if they transfer to the 2005 rules, their result in LS280 Moot Court will not count toward their degree and they will have to complete the unit LS480 Advanced Research, Writing and Advocacy and otherwise meet the 2005 requirements with respect to core and elective units.

Moot Court and the pre-2005 rules

Students continuing under the pre-2005 rules must complete the requirements for LS280 Moot Court. This unit will be offered for the last time in Semester 1, 2005. Students who have completed LS210 Civil Procedure and Evidence should consider enrolling in LS280 Moot Court in first semester 2005.

Students who, by the end of semester 1, 2005, have not completed LS280 Moot Court will have to meet the requirements of LS280 Moot Court in some other way. In order to allow students to meet these requirements I have determined that:

Students who are completing a law degree or the law component of a combined degree program under the pre-2005 rules may count LS480 Advanced Research, Writing and Advocacy as a Group D elective. Upon successful completion of LS480 students will be given advanced standing for LS280 Moot Court.

To put that another way, if you complete LS480 Advanced Research, Writing and Advocacy you will have both a group D elective and LS280 Moot Court.

If you chose not to do LS280 Moot Court or LS480 Advanced Research, Writing and Advocacy you may apply for advanced standing for LS280 Moot Court on the basis of a moot you have done somewhere else. Accordingly if you have done a moot as part of your assessment in another unit, or have competed in a mooting competition you may apply to me to have that counted as LS280 Moot Court. In making that application you will need to provide evidence to show that you completed a moot and what you were required to in preparation for that moot.
