Juris Doctor

The Juris Doctor (JD) is a full-fee professional legal qualification approved by the Legal Practitioners’ Admission Board for admission purposes.

Graduates of the JD having completed a short Practical Legal Training (PLT) course will meet admission requirements. Employment prospects include law firms, business and government.

The Juris Doctor is designed for graduates from non-law disciplines and lawyers with a civil law degree seeking to practise law in Australia. Another outstanding feature of this full-fee course is that graduates will receive advanced standing for half an LLM at UNE. JD graduates will only need to complete another four LLM electives to be eligible for a Master of Laws. Outstanding students may graduate with honours.

Curriculum design and rationale

The curriculum is designed around students completing the 16 core LLB units, four elective LLB units, one core LLM unit and three elective LLM units. The curriculum offers graduates of another discipline and civil system lawyers the opportunity to take advantage of either face to face or asynchronous online learning strategies to suit their learning needs. The curriculum is designed to provide a wide variety of units relevant to legal practice and professional admission. The teaching and assessment strategy is tailor made for part-time external students who will most likely comprise the bulk of the student cohort. There is a pathway to complete a coursework LLM by completing four additional LLM units. It is expected that this will prove very attractive to full-fee students.
