Ed-Serve - Access and Common Problems
Accessing Ed-Serve
Once your lecturer has organised the setting up of a Decision Support Tool for your unit (it will be set up by ITD) you should be able to get access to the decision support tools.
Step 1: Connect to the ed-serve portal by going to http://thin-client.une.edu.au/ed-serve

Step 2:
Click on the "Advanced Options" link (below Password:) which should present the following screen. The "client type" (if you are using the preferred browser, Internet Explorer) should be "ActiveX Control (embedded)" as shown below.

Important. The requirement for ActiveX to be in the 'client type' box above means that you will need to accept, when requested, the installation of ActiveX on your computer (this will only be necessary once). If you are logged on to a computer without 'Administrator' privileges, then you may NOT be able to install ActiveX and thus will not be able to either run the Decision Support Tool or you may not be able to 'copy and paste' graphical output from your Decision Support Tool into a Word document for creating an assignment.
Enter your UNE username and password.
Click on the "Log In" button.
Note: If you have trouble with your login to ed-serve, you may have a problem with your password. If you think this might be the case, you can reset a single password for accessing all UNE systems by going to the the "Accounts" tab in MyUNE and follow the prompts on screen. This will then re-set all your UNE passwords to a single password and should be implemented within about 10 minutes.
Step 3:
Once successfully logged in, you should see one or more icons for the various tools together with a unit code (e.g. anpr211-GrassGro).
To use the DST, click on the icon and wait for up to 1 minute while the necessary files are loaded. Please note that you may see a number of screens (e.g. black DOS boxes, Citrix logos, etc.) 'pop up' during this period - you can just ignore them and your application should load within 1 minute.
List of errors found in ed-serve and Decision Support Tools:
* Password problems
* Cannot Copy and Paste graphs
* Security Certificate
* Proxy Error
* Java required
* Unexpected System Error
* GrassGro errors
Password problems:
This is one of the most common problems.
If your password works to get into your units, but will not let you into your ed-serve, you will need to reset your password to enable access on your account. So, for any password problems: go to http://my.une.edu.au/, log in, go to the Accounts tab and change your password. Then try to use ed-serve again.
Cannot Copy and Paste graphs from GrassGro to Word:
Important. It is a requirement that when logging on to the Citrix thin client system that "ActiveX (embedded)" is selected in the 'client type' box. This means that you will need to accept, when requested, the installation of ActiveX on your computer (this will only be necessary once). Once you have permitted ActiveX to be installed, you should be able to Cut and Paste graphs from GrassGro to a Word document on your computer.
If you are using a computer without 'Administrator' privileges, then you may NOT be able to install ActiveX and thus will not be able to 'copy and paste' graphical output from your Decision Support Tool into a Word document for creating an assignment.
Security Certificate:
If you see this ...
This message comes up when the site certificate (a security certificate the site uses to assure the browser that it’s okay) has expired. However, the certificate for ed-serve is valid and this error is related to computer settings.
A solution to this problem is: in Internet Explorer: Go to Tools - Internet Options - Advanced - scroll down to Security and uncheck the "Check for publisher's certificate revocation" option. Also, if the you have Norton 360 installed on your computer, you may need to update it to the latest version.
Updating your operating system may also solve the problem; the easiest way to do this is from the Windows Update website.
Proxy Settings
Any error related to proxy settings is common on campus or for students who have UNE's proxy settings set up but are using the software from home.
If you get a proxy error message when you first log in, go to TOOLS - INTERNET OPTIONS - CONNECTIONS - LAN SETTINGS and UNTICK all the boxes on the following screen. Close your browser and try again.
Note: If you are on campus and need to access the internet, make sure you re-enable to proxy settings after your ed-serve session by reversing the above)
Java required:
Java is only used if you are on a computer that is not using Internet Explorer for Windows. If you are on a Windows computer and use Firefox, try IE as an alternative.
If your computer does not have Java installed, you can go to http://www.java.com/en/ - the latest software can be downloaded from there, but there is also a “Do I have Java” link that can be used to check if the right version for the operating system is installed (it will point to a download link if it detects a missing / out-of-date installation).
GrassGro errors
If GrassGro fails to execute correctly it may be because you have too many saved 'results' files from running GrassGro simulations (these are of type *.GRR and are large files) in your directory. In this case, your directory can become 'over quota'.
This should only occur if you save many simulations during a single session. This is because an automatic script runs regularly to delete these files from users' directories to prevent such errors. Results files can always be re-created by running the simulation file again.
Support:
If that does not solve your problem, please make a note of any error messages or symptoms of your problem and advise the IT Service Desk (Tel 02 6773 5000) or via AskUNE.
