    File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a system for moving files from one computer to another across a network.

    FTP is commonly used to download programs and other files to your computer from a server. You can use FTP to move files to and from "metz", UNE's UNIX file server.

    FTP using your web browser

    The easiest way to transfer files to and from metz (or any other FTP server) is to use your web browser. Today most current web browsers (eg, Internet Explorer 6, Netscape, Mozilla) have an inbuilt FTP facility to use a web browser for to transfer files.:

    • Open your preferred web browser.
    • Enter into the address field of your web browser the address below (replacing "yourUNEusername" with your username):
      ftp://yourUNEusername@metz.une.edu.au
    • Press the enter key, you will then be prompted for you UNE password. You will now see the contents of your metz account in the browser window.
    • To transfer files to your metz account drag the file onto the browser window.
    • To tranfer files from your metz account to your machine drag the file onto your desktop

    If you are using Internet Explorer 7 (Windows)

    Due to changes in Internet Explorer 7, the easiest way to FTP is to use Windows Explorer directy. To do this double click on "My Computer" on the desktop or select it from the Start menu. In the address bar at the top of the window type or paste in the address above (i.e. ftp://yourUNEusername@metz.une.edu.au). Then just follow the steps above.

     

    If you are using Mac OS X.

    The method describe above works for downloads of files (ie to copy files from the server to your local machine) but not for uploads (ie to copy files from your computer to metz). This is a security restriction in Mac OS X. You will need to use an FTP client like Fetch to connect to "metz"
