Mailing List FAQ

How do I subscribe to UNE Mailman mailing lists?

To subscribe to Mailman lists (une-events, une-forsale, une-discussion and many others) go to the mailman listinfo page. You will see a list of all the mailing lists at UNE. Click on the link for the list you would like to subscribe to and complete the section called "Subscribing to listname" on the next page.

How do I unsubscribe from these lists?

To unsubscribe from UNE Mailman lists ( une-events, une-forsale, une-discussion and many others) go to the mailman listinfo page, click on the name of the list from which you want to unsubscribe and follow the instructions under the section called "Listname Subscribers" on the next page.

How do I send my contribution to these lists?

Most lists require that you be a subscriber in order to post. If you are not subscribed or not posting from your subscribed address your posting will be rejected.

To post to UNE Mailman mailing lists send your email to:
listname@une.edu.au (substituing the actual listname, of course).
So, for instance, to forward your contribution to the "une-events" mailing list send it to:
une-events@une.edu.au

The mailing list software, on receipt of your contribution, will forward it to list members.

How do I set up my own list?

If you would like to set up your own list, please use our contact form or email us at servicedesk@une.edu.au with the name of the list you would like to set up. We will set the list up for you and make you the list administrator.

Every list requires an administrator: a person to "own" or manage the list. The interface for managing the list is through a web browser.
If you do not have the necessary computer skills to manage a list you need to nominate someone else who will be the list administrator.

I am subscribed to a list but receive a "You are not subscribed to this list" error email

For most UNE lists you must be subscribed in order to post messages, if you aren't subscribed you cannot post.

If you are subscribed to a mailing list as jbloggs@pobox.une.edu.au but try posting from jbloggs@une.edu.au your posting will be rejected. The list software sees these as two different people one of whom, jbloggs@une.edu.au, is not a subscriber.

The address from which the posting comes is a function of the email client you use. You must synchronise things so that the address from which you post is the address which is subscribed.

If this happens to you go to the mailman listinfo page, click on the list you are having problems with, unsubscribe as jbloggs@pobox.une.edu.au (this is done at the bottom of the page) then subscribe as jbloggs@une.edu.au.

It is possible to subscribe both addresses, but then you will get two copies of every posting to the list.

I am using Eudora (Mac/PC) and receive a lot of redundant "header" information with every posting

Windows users:

You can control the headers in ALL of the versions of Eudora.

  1. Close Eudora
  2. Open Windows Explorer. Find the directory where Eudora resides (may be C:\Eudora or C:\Program Files\Eudora). Look for the file called EUDORA.INI. When you find it, double click on it. Notepad will open so you can edit it.
  3. Look for the section labeled [Settings]
  4. If a line that says TabooHeaders= is included, replace it with the line below. If not, insert the line below directly underneath the [Settings] label. Cut and paste so that you get it exactly as shown, with no spaces or carriage returns.
    TabooHeaders=List,X,Received,Message-ID,MIME-Version,Content,Errors,Precedence
  5. Save the file and close notepad.
  6. Start Eudora. Open a message from a Mailman list. All the stuff you
don't need to see should be gone. Press the BlahBlahBlah button to see it again.

Mac Users:

If you are using Eudora for the Mac, you must have installed the Esoteric Settings plugin. [It is located in the Extra Plugins folder--install it by quitting Eudora, then moving the plugin to the Eudora Stuff folder in the Eudora application folder. Now restart Eudora.]

Go to Special | Settings | Boring Settings, and type in the identifiers for the headers you want removed, without the colon, exactly as they show up in the message. Look at the headers in a list message for examples. Possible headers to hide:

X-Authentication-Warning
Mail-Followup-To
User-Agent
Mime-Version
X-BeenThere
X-Mailman-Version
Precedence
List-Help
L ist-Post
List-Subscribe
List-Id
List-Unsubscribe
List-Archive

(Try copying and pasting the above list into the Boring Headers section)

Why shouldn't I use attachments when posting to mailing lists?

There are times when you may wish to post an attachment to a mailing list but you shouldn't.

  • Mailing list software can't always handle attachments and this is especially the case for subscribers who receive a digest version of the list. The attachments come out as miles of gibberish and can't be read.
  • Many people are connected via modem rather than the campus LAN and every extra bit that has to download (your attachment, for example) takes time and bandwidth.
  • If you send an attachment which is 1Mb in size to a list with 600 subscribers you have clogged up the email pipe with more than 600Mb of unsolicited data.
  • Instead of sending an attachment you can either put the document up on the web - every registered UNE computer user has personal web space in their metz account - then send the URL to your list. Those interested in the document can go to the web page.
Or, you can post to the list and ask those who want to see the document to email you off list and you can send them the attachment directly.

All postings to mailing lists should be made as plain text.
