UNE Computer Accounts

All UNE students are eligible for a computer account, which will allow you access to an email address, internet access, online resources and space on our main server.

Obtaining Computer Accounts

Internal and external students
can activate their account online on our online registration page or in person at IT Service Desk. You will need your student number to register; accounts will be activated immediately, though it might take a couple of hours for some systems to recognise your new account.

File Space

A UNE accounts gives users access to space on our UNIX fileserver. The file quota on the server (for file backups etc) is currently 10 megabytes for undergraduate students and 100 megabytes for postgraduate students and staff.

This space is made available for the user to store and to work with files.

Passwords

When you register for your computer accounts or when you change your password:

  • Do not forget your password
  • Record it in a safe place
  • Do not give out your password to anyone
  • It is also advisable to use upper and lowercase characters to enhance your password security.
  • Pick something that is easy for you to remember but difficult for others to gues

Format of the passwords:

Do not use passwords that are obvious or easy to guess, such as parts of your names, names of your family members or pets, your date of birth, phone number, student number or car registration details.

It is also a good idea to avoid any word that can be found in a dictionary, those passwords are to easy to crack with relatively simple tools.

The format of passwords at UNE is the an alpha numerical password of between six and eight characters with a mixture of upper, lower case characters and one special character. e.g. Brd9Mem*

Students can reset their password at IT Service Desk in person. Alternativly, students can resubmit their details with a new password in the password field in the online registration form .
