Only phones listed on the form are available to UNE. Authorisation for the purchase is required.
Support for Mobile Phones
The IT Service Desk can only offer support for mobile phones that are on UNE's mobile phone contract with Telstra. We do not offer support for privately owned mobiles or work mobiles that are not on UNE's Telstra contract.
Please refer to the user manual for your specific model for setup instructions. Some information on setting up email on your phone can be found here.
Lost / Stolen Mobiles
If your phone is lost or stolen, please contact Telstra on 125111 to deactivate the phone. Please also let the Service Desk know that the phone was lost/stolen so that we can update your record internally.
International Roaming
To request International Roaming on your mobile, please ask a person with financial authority to email the Service Desk (servicedesk@une.edu.au) and request activation of International Roaming on your number. We will contact Telstra on your behalf to have the privileges added to your number - allow a few days for this to be completed.
Note: please be aware that call and data charges can amount to significant cost when using you phone overseas an indication of these charges can be found at,

Using your mobile phone overseas
Mobile device voice and data plans only work in Australia so when you leave the country, you’ll be paying whatever price the particular service provider that you select charges for voice calls and you’ll be charged for both incoming and outgoing calls. Data usage is charged at $15.00 per megabyte if you’re in a country that Telstra has an agreement with. If there’s no agreement, you‘ll pay the price the service provider charges for data usage in that country. This can quickly add up and result in a huge bill at the end of your trip.
How can ITD help?
There’s not much we can do when it comes to voice calls, we’re at the mercy of the overseas service providers, so please take the time to find out what it’s going to cost before you go. And don’t forget, you get charged for incoming as well as outgoing calls! Information on international roaming charges is available from the Telstra website at: http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/internat_roaming/index.cfm Or, if you don’t mind having a different number, a cheaper alternative is to buy a pay as you go service in the local region when you get there.
For data access, we can arrange for the connection of International Roaming Data Plans. If you’ll be connecting to mobile email, using data applications on your mobile device or accessing the internet on your computer when you’re overseas, consider an International Roaming Data Plan. You’ll pay a monthly access fee and receive a monthly allowance for use in selected countries.
Where does it work?
Countries where you can use an International Roaming Data Plan:
- Canada
- France
- Germany
- Hong Kong
- Japan
- Indonesia
- Malaysia
- New Zealand
- Philippines
- Singapore
- South Africa
- Thailand
- United Kingdom
- United Arab Emirates
- USA
What are the plan options?
$29 - gives you $150 worth of data (10MB)
$85 - gives you $450 worth of data (30MB)
$160 - gives you $900 worth of data (60MB)
$350 - gives you $2250 worth of data (150MB)
$550 - gives you $3750 worth of data (250MB)

$1800 - gives you $15000 worth of data (1GB)
You’ll be charged a 50 cent fee for each separate data session initiated from your device in addition to the monthly plan charge. If you take-up or cancel your International Roaming Data plan part-way through a billing month, your monthly plan charge and included data allowance for that month will be pro-rated according to the days the plan was active in that month. Excess usage beyond the included allowance or excluded data usage will incur international roaming data PAYG charges of $15 per MB.
If you’d like to connect one of these international roaming data plans, please contact the IT Service Desk by email at: email at servicedesk@une.edu.au, or via ASK UNE, please include your mobile number and autorisation from your cost centre manager.
Cancellation of a mobile phone number
Please ask your Head of Cost Centre to email the IT Service Desk (servicedesk@une.edu.au) with a request to cancel the relevant phone number.
Taking your mobile phone number with you when you leave
To take your mobile phone number with you when you leave the University, written authorisation by your Head of Cost Centre is required. Please ask them to either provide a written letter or email the Service Desk (servicedesk@une.edu.au) and confirm that they authorise the transfer of ownership of number xxx to you. We will then provide the necessary paperwork for the transfer.
Mobile Phone Recycling
ITD has signed up the Don't Dump It, Donate It mobile phone campaign. A collection box for old mobile phones can be found at the IT Service Desk - either come to the desk to drop of your phones or send them to us in the internal mail. Individual prepaid envelopes to recycle personal mobile phones are also available for the Service Desk.
Checking your data usage
Do you want to know how much data you’re using on your work mobile?
An estimate of mobile data usage can be requested by sending an SMS with the keyword use to 176 (standard SMS charges apply). You’ll receive an SMS that will show you an estimate of the data used from your mobile at the time of your request for the current billing period.
If you’d like to receive a warning SMS when you’ve used 80% of your data plan for the month, send an SMS with the keyword notice.on to 176 and you’ll receive an SMS but only when or if you reach 80% of your data quota.
Remember, this only works in Australia and doesn’t work when you’re overseas.
