Windows XP wireless setup information.

Procedure

The following instructions are designed to help you connect your computer to the university’s wireless network on Windows XP SP2.

For most users connecting to the wireless network should be a simple process but in some cases a different set up may be required. If you have difficulty connecting to the wireless network after following these instructions – simply contact the IT Service desk.

Changing your password

UNE requires students and staff to have a secure UNE password, as such any user that has not registered their account or reset their password since the 8th Feb 2007, will need to reset their password in order to access UNE’s wireless network.

How do I change my password?

Just go to myUNE  http://my.une.edu.au and click on the account tab, simply follow the instructions to reset your password.

Set up instructions

  1. Go to the Start menu
  2. Click on Control panel
  3. Click on Network Connections
  4. Right click on the Wireless Network Connection icon
  5. Select Properties from the drop down menu
  6. Click on the Wireless Networks tab.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

You should see a box like this one above.

  • If UNE (Automatic) is available, highlight it and click on Properties.
  • If you don’t see UNE (Automatic) here you simply need to click Add instead of Properties.

You need to enter the following information here:

  1. SSID = UNE
  2. Network Authentication = WPA
  3. Data Encryption =AES

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In the Authentication tab set above:

  1. EAP type = protected EAP (PEAP)
  2. Un-tick ‘Authenticate as computer when computer information is available’
  3. Un-tick ‘Authenticate as guest when user or computer information is unavailable’
  4. Click on the properties button

Having clicked on the EAP properties button you should see the following box. In this box set:

  1. Un-tick Validate Server Certificates
  2. Select Authentication method = Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)
  3. Un-tick Enable fast reconnect
  4. Click on the Configure button

 

 

 

 

 

When you click on Configure you will see the above box.

  1. Un-tick ‘Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)
  2. Click OK
  3. Click OK on the next screen too

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Connections tab above
  1. Ensure that ‘connect when this network is in range’ is ticked
  2. Click OK
  3. Click OK on the next screen

You should now see an information balloon like this one appear down near the clock in the bottom right corner of your desktop. Click on the balloon

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  1. Enter your logon details
  2. Click OK
  3. You will now be connected to the wireless network
