Modem Setup in Windows XP

Please note that Windows 2000 option may vary from those listed here. The settings are the same, and will work if entered. Please contact the Service Desk if you run into any problems.

  • Go to Start .
  • Select Control Panel .

  • Click on Network Connections .

  • Select Create a New Connection from the menu on the left.
  • This will activate the New Connection Wizard .

  • Select Connect to the Internet .
  • Click Next .

  • Select Set up my connection manually .
  • Click Next .

  • Select Connect using a dial-up modem .
  • Click Next .

  • You will now be asked to give this connection a name. You can call this whatever you like, but UNE is probably the most logical name.
  • Click Next .

  • Enter the telephone number, which is 67733000 . If you are calling from outside the Armidale/Uralla/Guyra area, add 02 . Note, rates from outside this area are changed at STD rates by your telephone provider.
  • Click Next .

  • You will now be asked to establish the availability of this connection. If you share this computer with other users, you may wish to allow them to access this connection. Please note, however, that it is a breach of the Rules of Use for you to give your username and password out to anyone, including close family.
  • Click Next

  • Enter your details that have been provided to you by the Service Desk. These include your Username and Password .
  • You may choose to un-select the Use this account when anyone connects to the internet . This is up to you.
  • Make sure this is the default connection.
  • Un-select the Internet Connection Firewall . If you leave this on, the connection will not work
  • Click Next .

  • Check the box to add a shortcut to your desktop. This will make it easier to find this connection and hook it up when you are ready to start.
  • Click Finish

To connect to websites outside of UNE from home.


To connect to external websites from home, a further setting is required. To set up internet access, please add the following setting.

  • Open Internet Explorer.
  • Go to TOOLS – INTERNET OPTIONS
  • Click on the Connections tab
  • Double-click on the UNE connection you created in the previous step

  • Tick Use automatic configuration script and enter http://proxy.une.edu.au/proxy in the address field.



OK all screens. Your access to the internet is now set up.
