Server Space
File Space - Unix Server
A UNE account gives users access to space on our UNIX fileserver (called metz). The file quota on the server (for file backups etc) is currently 10 megabytes for undergraduate students and 100 megabytes for postgraduate students and staff.
This space is made available for the user to store and to work with files.
There are two common methods of connecting to metz. Mapping a drive creates a semi-permanent connection to metz and is useful if you are a frequent user and are connected to the UNE campus network. For off-campus users and/or infrequent use, FTP is a quicker alternative. Instructions for connecting using both methods can be found below:

File Space - Windows Server
For users with a UNE Domain account (which is most staff members and some postgraduate students) space is also available on our Windows fileserver (called barney). Two main areas are available on barney, the User area (also known as the H: drive) which contains your personal user space; and the Stafffiles area (also known as the S: drive) which contains departmental folders for shared documents.
The default quota set on barney is 200 MB per staff member for in your user folder and 1GB per department in the Stafffiles area. Additional quota may be made available if required.
Please contact the IT Service Desk for all enquiries including access to specific departmental folders within the S: drive, and increases in quota size.
Users who log onto the UNE Domain when starting their computer will automatically connect to barney (your H: and S: drives will appear under My Computer).
If your computer is not on the UNE Domain you can map your H: and S: drives in a similar fashion to the metz instructions above the file path for Windows to map to the drive
select the letter H for the drive,
enter the folder file path as
\\barney\users\username
for the S drive,
\\barney\stafffiles
you will need to click on "Connect using a different username"
and enter your user name as une\username and your password
tick the box reconnect at logon if you would like to keep the connection
Please note: it is not possible to FTP into barney. If you need to access barney from off campus you will need to use a VPN Client (preferred) or install Citrix (freely downloadable from our local software page here)
