Network in Colleges

How can you help to prepare your computer for the UNE network?

Please take a look at the all of the actions below if you are experiecing problems connecting to the UNE network

VIRUS PROTECTION

If you don’t have a (current) virus scanner installed, you must install one immediately and enable regular updates and scans of all your local and removable drives. UNE provides free antivirus software (Sophos) to all students - please go to our AntiVirus page for more details and for download options.

These packages need to be configured to access updates via the proxy server - please click here for information about virus protection and proxy updates.

REMOVE NETSCAN (or other scanning software).

If you are running Netscan (or other network scanning software, eg Sharescan), please uninstall it asap. Any computer with Netscan running will be considered hostile and blocked by our network.  Tell everyone you know to stop running this software!

TURN OFF INTERNET CONNECTION SHARING

If you are sharing your internet connection, please disable this feature. To do so, right-click on your Local Area Network connection, select Properties and click on the “Sharing” tab. Make sure Internet Sharing is NOT enabled.

DO NOT USE NEXT G MODEMS WHILE ALSO CONNECTED TO THE ETHERNET

Please unplug your network (ethernet) connection if you are using a Next G wireless modem or another home network devices (routers) to connect to the internet.

KEEP WINDOWS UPDATED

Regularly update your operating system with system and security updates – go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to install the latest patches.

DO NOT SHARE FILES ON THE COLLEGE NETWORK

Sharing of copyrighted materials (music, movies etc) breaches UNE’s Rules for Computing Use  (http://www.une.edu.au/policies/pdf/rulesofusecomputingcommunicationsfacilities.pdf) and Copyright Law.

DO NOT SHARE USB THUMBDRIVES (or external Hard Drives)

A number of viruses have spread via USB thumbdrives. Please do no share files via thumbdrives, especially if you do not have current virus protection.
