Iran with 1,648,195 Km 2 is bordered to the north by the states of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan (all Republics of the former USSR) and the Caspian Sea; to the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan; to the south by the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf; and to the west by Iraq and Turkey.I ran is about one-fiftgh the size of the USA and more than three times larger than France.
The country is dominated by three mountain ranges: the fertile, volcanic Sabalan and Talesh ranges in the north-west; the very long, Jurassic-era Zagros range, down the western border; and the dominant Alborz range, home of Iran 's highest mountain, the permanently snowcapped Damavand (5670m/18,600ft), to the north of Tehran . The two great Iranian deserts, the Dasht-é Kavir (more than 200,000 sq. km/78,000 sq. MI) and the Dasht-é Lut (more than 166,000 sq. km/64,740 sq. MI), occupy most of the north-east and east of the central plain.
The northern slopes of the Alborz are densely covered with deciduous trees, forming the largest area of vegetation in Iran.There are some lovely pockets of forest around Khalkhal, south of Ardabil, and at Nahar Khoran, just south of Gorgan In the heart of the Middle East, Iran links the Caspian Sea, the most beautiful land-located and the largest body of water in the world,to the Persian Gulf, and also, it is a crossroads on the way of East toWest, i.e. the junction of cultural, intellectual and political manifestations of the worlds of East and West. Limpid water springs, pomegranate orchards, pistachio gardens, rows of lombardy poplars, decampment of nomands in different seasons, stelliferous nights, rocks, mountains, endless high and low lands, snow-clad extinct volcanoes, luxuriant forests of Alborz mountain range, and coastlines of the Caspian Sea are amongst the eye-catching and memorable landscapes of Iran's nature which leave unique in the minds of tourists. Among significant characteristics of vast land of Iran, which is of tourism importance, is the existence of high mountains, flat plains, desert areas, rivers and lakes which all together have created a unique geographical condition in which, at any time of the year one can see all four seasons in different parts of the country.
Iran today is both modern and ancient. It is the most populous and the second-largest country in the Middle East located south of the Caspian Sea and north of the Persian Gulf . It shares borders with Iraq , Turkey , Azerbaijan , Turkmenistan , Armenia , Afghanistan , and Pakistan . The country is generally on a plateau averaging 1,219 meters (4,000 feet) in elevation. There are also maritime lowlands along the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea . The Alburz Mountains in the north rise to 5,670 meters (18,603 feet) at Mount Damavend . From northwest to southeast, the country is crossed by a desert 1,287 kilometers (800 miles) long. About 11% of Iran , in the mountains bordering the Caspian Sea , is covered with mostly deciduous forest. Brown forest soils found along the coasts of the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf are used extensively for farming. Iran has extremely rich mineral resources, especially petroleum and natural gas. In the West, the country has been known as Persia , from the ancient Greek name for the heartland of the empire, Persis. The use of the name Iran was requested by the government in 1935. Iran became Muslim after the Arab conquest in the 7th century, and Shiite Islam became its official religion in the 16th century. Aryan tribes migrated into the Iranian plateau in the 2d millennium BC. Iran 's official language, is Farsi, an Indo-European language, written in modified Arabic script since the 10th century. Iran 's long history of continuous administration and independent rule, shared culture, and common religion, have given the large majority of Iranians a strong sense of national identity.
