Postgraduate Research Scholarships

The University of New England offers a number of substantial scholarship opportunities to postgraduate students studying research-based degrees at UNE. There are different types of scholarships available; some are targeted to specific disciplines or research projects and others are more general with broader eligibility criteria. The different types of scholarships are outlined on the University’s webpage at http://une.edu.au/scholarships/

Students should carefully check the eligibility criteria listed for each scholarship as not all are available to International Students. Two of the substantial scholarships available to international postgraduate research students studying at UNE are the Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) and the UNERA Scholarship.

Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS)

The Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) program is funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Education, Science and Training. The main objectives of the IPRS program are to attract high quality international postgraduate students to areas of research strength in Australian higher education institutions; and to support Australia’s research effort. The IPRS program enables international students to undertake a postgraduate research qualification in Australia and gain experience with leading Australian researchers. IPRS scholarships are open to international students from all countries (except New Zealand) who have been accepted for fulltime, on-campus candidature to a postgraduate research degree at UNE. The scholarships are available for a period of two years for Masters by research candidates or three years for a Doctorate by research candidates.

Students wishing to apply for an IPRS must have completed at least a four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent at a very high level. The Scholarship covers tuition fees and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) costs for scholarship holders, and OSHC costs (i.e. not tuition fees) for their dependents. The application closing date for Endeavour IPRS scholarships is 31 October each year. Further information relating to the IPRS program, including how to apply, eligibility criteria, conditions and current benefits, can be obtained from the Research Services webpage http://www.une.edu.au/research-services/pgstudy/scholarships/, by contacting the Postgraduate Scholarships Office at pg_scholarships@une.edu.au or telephone + 61 2 6773 3571 or from the DEST website http://www.endeavour.dest.gov.au/

These scholarships generally provide full-time on campus international students a living allowance per year (in 2006 the amount is AU$19,231 per annum), a tuition fee cover and other benefits, including travel, removal and establishment assistance (if applicable), a thesis allowance of up to AU$420 for Masters and up to AU$840 for PhD candidates, and a dependents allowance of AU$900 per annum for each dependent child residing in Australia. The scholarships are usually awarded to international students who have completed at least a four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent at a very high level and who enrol at UNE as fulltime on-campus postgraduate research degree candidates. The scholarships are awarded for three years for Doctor of Philosophy candidates and for two years for Masters by Research candidates. Applications for the UNERA International scholarships are competitive and awarded on the basis of academic merit.

Applicants who have a First Class Honours Degree or the international equivalent and/or a Masters Research degree and/or considerable publications and research experience will be given preference. The application closing date for UNERA International Scholarships is May 15 each year.
