Master of Environmental Advocacy

See our new promotional video

A holistic multi-disciplinary approach is needed to deal with the diverse  challenges of environmental problems. This degree offers a unique blend of  environmental security, ethics and philosophy, peace studies (eg nonviolent activism), politics and international studies.

The electives allow you to choose from a wide range of disciplines, including Natural Resources, Geography and Planning, Agriculture, Indigenous Studies, Archaeology, Education, Law, Psychology and Economics. Research projects and reading units allow you to further specialise and research areas of special interest, such as artistic activism, or ecofeminism. This flexible approach allows you to tailor your degree to your career path and interests.

The degree is aimed at staff of environmental organisations, businesses and international NGOs, as well as conservationists, teachers, Land Care officers, sustainability officers and volunteers, environmental education officers, government employees (federal, state and local), and citizens concerned about climate change and other environmental issues.

Governments, councils and business are increasingly employing environmental officers and consultants, and initiating environmental programmes e.g. the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (NSW)’s ‘Sustainability Programs Division’. Therefore, there is a growing demand fo to work as environmental advocates.

Environmental NGOs are playing an ever-greater role in global, regional and local affairs. They too benefit from a pool of qualified advocates, particularly persons qualified those who display ability to see ‘the big picture’, and who can employ creativity and leadership. Scientific evidence for human-made climate change and biodiversity loss is overwhelming. What the global community now needs is more qualified people who can convince governments, business and the community of the need for urgent environmental action, and who can show them how to go about such action.
