Copies of the ledgers of the Tamworth Muncipal Council which contain the record of the categorised business and financial dealings of the Council between 1876 and 1925. Only one assessment book, for the year 1876, and one Water rate register, for the yea
r 1903, are contained in this collection. The cash book also contains the records of a relatively short period of time from July of 1905 to December of 1908. The rate books, however, run for the years 1877 to 1910 and 1913 to 1924. The valuation books

Multiple roneo-ed TS. Copies of the reminiscences of William Telfer Jr., Who was born at Calala (West Tamworth) in July 1841, was the son of the first manager of "Warrah", in the employ of the Australian Agricultural Company under 'Commissioner' Parry. Th
e reminiscences relate to the period from the 1840's to the years after Federation. The original manuscript from which these copies were made is in the UNE Archives (A147/ V213). It was found among papers deposited by Gen. J.M.L. MacDonald in 1961, and fo
r more than a decade after that was known as "the shepherd's diary" or "the Wallabadah MS.", Until the identity of the author was definitely established in 1972. 120 pages per copy. |

The diaries contain a fairly detailed account of Towner's daily activities as a settler and family-man, during his long life in the Richmond Valley. [Note: The record group contains two diaries written by Emma Towner for the years 1947-1951, and a single
volume by George Towner Jnr., Dated 1915] Born at Congewai, near Cessnock, N.S.W., George Towner went to the Richmond River district at the age of 15, where he worked at timber-getting and road-building. In 1878 he married Emma Barlow of Alstonville. He s
elected land at Meerschaum (Rous Hill) and lived there until 1924 when he retired to Ballina, where he died aged 91 years. His wife Emma died in 1951, aged 94. |
