| DRUMMOND, DAVID HENRY: PAPERS | A large and miscellaneous collection of papers of the late David Henry Drummond from every period of his political life. Many of these papers discuss two of his major interests, education and constitutional issues. A complete list of this material is available on request. David Henry Drummond (1890-1965) first entered public life in 1920 as one of the elected members to State Parliament from the Northern Tablelands. Upon the return of single-member seats in 1927, Drummond was elected the member for Armidale, the position he retained until 1949. Within the Country Party that he helped to create, he campaigned tirelessly for the separation of the New England region as a new state. In 1931 he was prominent in the merger of the New State Movement ideals with his political party to form the United Country Party. During this time, he also held the education portfolio through three successive governments. This emphasis on education was evident when, in 1929, he established the first rural teacher's college at Armidale, thus decentralising tertiary education in New South Wales. This commitment to rural education was also shown in his instrumental support of the creation of the New England University College in 1938. In 1949 David Henry Drummond won the seat of New England in the Federal Parliament and became an influential back-bencher with an interest in constitutional issues. He was also a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs from 1952 to 1961.
