Armidale Teachers College Records

Bower bird

In 1928 Cecil Bede Newling was appointed as principal of the Armidale Teachers'College which began in temporary premises at the Demonstration School. After the demolition of the Armidale Gaol in 1929, the foundation stone for the A.T.C. was laid by local member, D.H. Drummond. Drummond was also the state Minister for Education and a major supporter for the establishment of the college.

A.T.C. students came from throughout the state and resided in various Armidale accommodation venues. Girrawheen was a women's hostel for many students and this place became Smith House later. Howard Hinton a patron of art, donated a large and significan t art collection to be housed in the college. A large stained glass window depicting 'Wisdom' on the college first floor is a Hinton donation.

The A.T.C. produced many and distinguished teachers over several decades and then began a new era as the Armidale College of Advanced Education in 1971.
