Dr. Siri Gamage

Dr. Siri Gamage, Senior Lecturer, School of Education, UNE has been teaching multicultural studies, education studies and professionals studies since 1990. Prior to his appointment at the University of New England he was a senior Lecturer in the department of Sociology, University of Peradeniya, Sri lanka where he served from 1974-1986. He came to Melbourne, Australia with his family in 1986 and completed his PhD in anthropology & sociology at Monash University.

Dr. Gamage's completed research focuses on the adaptation of immigrants and their children to Australian culture, society and institutions and the identity & culture issues they face when having to operate within the national framework determined by the governments. He continues to research the intercultural and transcultural experiences of migrant and non-immigrant populations in Australia while adopting a critical approach to the study of multiculturalism, ethnicity,globalisation, identity, culture and education. He has published papers on topics relevant to Australia and Sri Lanka.

His current teaching includes social justice issues in education as relevant to pre-school teacher education students; globalisation, cultures and work; immigrants and society; and Comparative study of Ethnic and Indigenous Minorities. A number of postgraduate students undertaking Masters and PhD studies from Australia and Sri Lanka work with him as their principal supervisor. Topics of study include development, education and migration.

Dr. Gamage & his family have been resident of Armidale since 1990.
