GSB 748 Legal Studies

Legal Studies provides a basic understanding of the concepts and principles of the Australian legal system relevant to managers of commercial enterprises and other organisations. It deals primarily with the area of business or commercial law.

The aims of this unit are to:

  1. provide an understanding of the working of the Australian legal system;
  2. provide a basic knowledge of the key areas of law relevant to business and/or business activity, such as torts, contract law, and aspects of commercial law; and
  3. facilitate the acquisition of basic legal skills, including legal reasoning.

The unit focuses on the conceptual learning of legal principles and the development of appropriate techniques for solving legal problems. Upon completion of this unit, students should be able to identify basic legal issues and problems, analyse how the law applies to factual situations and be able to articulate and to adopt solutions which are consistent with general legal principles.

As with all law units, there is a considerable amount of material to be covered. However, more attention is paid to contract law than to other subjects, as contract law is central to understanding many of the other areas of commercial law.
