GSB 745 Executive Leadership
This unit provides an overview of the theory and practice of leadership. It adopts a hands-on approach that will provide students with the depth of knowledge and understanding necessary to be able to develop successful leadership in their organisations. Topics covered in the unit include: an overview of leadership theory; the evolution of the study of leadership; leader traits and behaviour; charismatic and transformational leadership styles; leadership and gender; team leadership; power and influence; leadership development and; strategic leadership.
Executive leadership has a practical focus. By the end of the unit participants are expected to be able to:
- describe and analyse key dimensions of executive leadershipincluding the theoretical exploration of leadership theory;
- describe the role and impact of power, influence, culture,gender and other systemic influences on organizational leadership practice;
- develop a personal leadership strategy for their own work context; and
- gain practical insights into the increasing importance of strategic leadership.
The unit has a special emphasis on personal leadership development. This unit involves an average amount of reading and conceptual learning. It could be studied in conjunction with another unit that does not have a heavy reading requirement.
