GSB 725 Strategic Management

Strategic Management is about managing for long-term success. It covers the whole spectrum of management and explores the development, implementation and evaluation of strategies in organisations.

It demands the simultaneous consideration of many variables including those from functional areas and situational factors. This requires judgement regarding their relative importance and how they impact on each other. This integrative thinking and the ability to recommend concrete actions make this a capstone unit.

The overriding objective of this unit is to develop your ability to think strategically, to evaluate situations from a strategic perspective and then to reach sound strategic decisions. The unit teaches you to use the techniques of strategic analysis and sharpens your skills in the development of strategic alternatives. You also develop experience in the evaluation of all aspects of strategic management.

Hence, the aims of this unit are to:

  1. develop your ability to think strategically about an organisation, its position in the marketplace and how it can pro-actively gain a sustainable competitive advantage;
  2. build your skills in conducting strategic analysis in different industries and competitive situations; and
  3. improve you ability to manage the organisational processes by which strategies are implemented.
