GSB 703 Advanced Financial Accounting

This unit is concerned with the provision of accounting data to management and the use of accounting data by management in planning and controlling the organisation’s operations. The specific aims of the unit are to increase your knowledge and skills in:

  1. the theory of cost and management accounting;
  2. the use of management accounting principles and techniques for locating decision opportunities;
  3. the use of management accounting principles and techniques for evaluating alternative problem solutions; and
  4. the use of management accounting as a tool in achieving management control.

Participants are assumed to have some basic knowledge of accounting equivalent to GSB 701 Introductory Accounting. The unit seeks to develop analytic skills rather than rote learning skills. By the end of the unit we hope that participants will be skilled in applying general principles to case situations rather than being able to reproduce detailed techniques. The unit is designed to assist those using accounting data in the management of an organisation and those involved in preparing accounting data for use in managerial decision making and control functions.

The unit uses a very detailed study guide to help participants through the material contained in the text and a small quantity of articles. A solutions manual covering 50% of the problems/cases accompanies the text.
