GSB 653 Business and Government in Australia

This unit examines the relationship between Business and Government in Australia. It is based on the premise that this complex relationship is crucial to both Business and Government and for the wellbeing of the Australian economy.

The unit begins with an examination of the context of Business-Government relations, paying attention to federalism, the mixed capitalist economy and globalisation. It then turns to Business in Government, the Public Policy Process, Patterns of Interaction, Public Affairs Management, Corporate Political Communication and Compliance Strategies, Participation, Lobbying, and Business and Environmental Strategies before undertaking comparisons with other countries. The unit concludes with an examination of the Changing Role of the State.

GSB653 balances theoretical understandings with practical applications of knowledge and skills necessary for effective Business-Government relations. Students come to the unit with varying degrees of understandings about Australian political institutions and processes. All complete the unit with a better understanding of these and the importance of such a unit.

The expectation is that students will read the materials and texts and keep abreast of current affairs in newspapers and magazines. To be effective in this area, people need to be informed, so one exercise involves following an issue in the media. Obviously, the wider the reading, the greater the breadth and depth of understanding.

GSB 653 is crucial for students wanting to develop their understanding and effectiveness in the Business-Government framework and is most useful for effective citizenship.
