Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting

The Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting represents Stage 1 of the professional educational requirements leading to professional membership of the National Institute of Accountants (NIA) and is available to TAFE qualified members of the NIA who wish to move from Associate (ANIA) status to Member (MNIA) status of the NIA.

Admission to Candidature

The Graduate Certificate is available on a fee-paying basis and is normally undertaken by part-time study.

A candidate for the Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting shall:

  • (a) have completed all the requirements for a Bachelor's degree; or
  • (b) have completed an Advanced Diploma (or equivalent) relevant to the award, and shall have had at least two years (full-time equivalent) of relevant work experience in accountancy or a related field.
  • (c) In addition, applicants must provide evidence of membership of the National Institute of Accountants.

Requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting

To satisfy the requirements for the award, a candidate shall complete 24 credit points or four units.

Students with TAFE Qualifications can gain MNIA membership status by completing:

Compulsory Units – must be completed at the earliest opportunity

GSB600 Strategic Management in Professional Practice
GSB751 Business and Professional Ethics

Elective Units

Complete two from the following list:
GSB602 Issues in Management Accounting
GSB603 International Accounting
GSB606 Advanced Taxation Law
GSB641 Advanced Financial Accounting 
GSB711 Managerial Finance
GSB749 Law of Commercial Associations
GSB750 Taxation Law

Certified or notarised copies of original academic transcripts (and evidence of change of name, if applicable)

Certified Copy of NIA Membership Renewal Notice

Copy of Resume showing a minimum of two years work experience in a related field

Proof of Identification: Birth certificate or evidence of Australian citizenship/ permanent residency such as pages from passport.

Evidence of English proficiency:

Those applicants whose previous education was not in English must provide evidence of English Proficiency.   UNE English Proficiency requirements are listed on the internet at http://www.une.edu.au/policies/pdf/englishlanguagerequirements.pdf

International students applying for admission to this course:
Will need to download and complete the application form.

Candidates who have completed a Bachelor’s degree

Candidates who have an approved University Degree in Accounting need only complete the four core subjects of the program and the NIA’s Mentored Experience Program to become a Professional National Accountant (PNA).

All Candidates must satisfy the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in not more than three years from the date of commencement of candidature.

Advanced Standing

Students who have partially completed the Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting at UNE or another University can receive credit for up to three units (18 cp).  No advanced standing will be granted for units completed as part of an undergraduate award.
