Teaching Material
Teaching material commence despatch from mid-December onwards for Trimester 1 and a month before the commencement of Trimesters 2 and 3. Materials are shipped on a per unit basis. Consequently, if you have enrolled in more than one unit, your materials will not arrive together. You may receive your materials very early in some trimesters and closer to the start of trimester at other times. Despatch is handled by our Teaching and Learning Centre. It is impossible to be specific about which units will ship first and when they will ship. Do not regard the teaching material as late unless it has not arrived by the start of trimester.
You are asked to check the contents of each batch of teaching material immediately after receipt to make sure that you have received everything on the packing list and that all of your material is in good condition.
If your materials are sent to a home address the package will be held at the local post office if someone is not there to sign for it. A card will be left indicating from where it should be collected. If you are concerned that your materials are late or have been lost, please check with the post office before contacting the GSB . We accept responsibility for materials to the point at which they are signed for. If they are sent to your work address it is your responsibility to liaise with your mail room to ensure that you receive the materials.
If your materials have not arrived by the start of trimester, please contact us immediately. If materials are sent late due to delays at UNE, we will advise the academic staff accordingly so that they can grant assignment extensions where necessary. When possible, we will post information on Blackboard to allow students to commence studies even though the full materials may not be available.
Customs Duty for students residing overseas
The GSB does not pay customs duty on the delivery of materials. The reasons for this are that most students residing overseas do not get charged any customs duty and if they do the amount varies. There is no equitable way that this charge can be determined in the fees payable. It depends on the country the student resides in and sometimes it varies, even in that same country.
The additional two hundred dollars that a student residing overseas is charged covers the administration and organisation of examination venues.
Delayed or Late Materials
Should your enrolment be held up for any reason your unit material will also be delayed. If you are worried about the late arrival of teaching material you should check with your local post office before making contact with the GSB Office. If you have not received your teaching material by the first day of the trimester in which the unit is taught, please contact the GSB office.
Though we try to ensure that all units are sent in time for the commencement of the trimester there are occasions where units are dispatched late. When this occurs we notify all enrolled students by email prior to the start of the trimester. We will place as much material as possible onto Blackboard so that you can commence study at the beginning of the trimester. Readings cannot be placed onto Blackboard due to copyright restrictions. We will endeavour to send texts ahead of the unit notes if the unit will be late.
Textbooks
For text book information please check the Courses and Units Catalogue or visit the United Campus Bookshop web site at http://www.ucb.net.au/.
Orders can be place online. In addition, United Campus Bookshops has a mail, telephone and fax order service. United Campus Bookshops are open from 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday and orders for texts may be placed by telephone on (02) 6773 2289 or by fax on (02) 6772 3469 or by email armidale@ucb.net.au.
Class Lists
Class lists are available on the myUNE student portal under the myStudy tab. Information will be listed for those studentswho have agreed to release it.
You are urged to form discussion groups if you can, but remember that they are not to be regarded as a substitute for, but rather as a complement to, correspondence and other forms of interaction with your unit lecturer or tutor in Armidale. It is often practical to form self-help groups which meet in private houses or at convenient local institutions, with the leadership of enthusiastic members. For many students the informal group which meets irregularly, contacting two or three others by telephone as the need arises, has been very useful.
