Master of Business Research

The curriculum design for this degree requires students to develop advanced skills in research methodology and data analysis as well as engaging in some advanced content-oriented learning in business areas relevant to their evolving dissertation project. The minor dissertation pathway is designed for students who need a greater level of development in both content and research methodology areas.

One outcome will be a substantive piece of independent research.

Students wishing to undertake a higher proportion of research activity should consider the Master of Business Research with Honours which has 4 units of coursework and a major dissertation (8 units). This degree is administered through Research Services at UNE. Please refer to the Research Services Website.

This course if offered on a Full Fee basis in 2012.

On the approval of the course coordinator, a candidate is required to complete units to the value of at least 72 credit points comprising course work and a minor dissertation to the value of 24 credit points.

In special circumstances and with the approval of the course coordinator, a candidate may substitute another unit for a Research Methodology unit, where it has been deemed that the candidate has completed an equivalent unit in a previous award.

Minor Dissertation

Students are required to enrol in BEPP591, and submit a minor dissertation embodying an original investigation of a topic within an approved field of study. This dissertation will normally not exceed 20 000 words of text, excluding appendices. The dissertation will not normally be submitted until all the coursework components of the degree are complete.

A full-time candidate shall be required to enrol in and complete the dissertation over one trimester; in all other cases candidates shall be required to enrol in and complete the dissertation over two consecutive trimesters, which shall not include the first trimester of candidature unless advanced standing has been granted and the period of candidature has been reduced.

Period of Attendance at the University

Except with the permission of the course coordinator, a candidate shall be in full-time attendance at the University or arrange other forms of personal contact with the supervisor for a minimum of five days during the period of enrolment in BEPP591 for a candidate undertaking a dissertation.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for admission in the Master of Business Research, applicants must have completed a degree or qualification of equivalent standing at this or another university or tertiary institution, provided that the degree or qualification:

  • required a minimum of three years of full-time study in business; or
  • required a minimum of three years of full-time study in a field of study considered appropriate by the faculty on the advice of the relevant head of school or nominee as being adequate preparation for candidature.
