Professor Nick Reid

Nick Reid

Professor Nick Reid is Chair of the Academic Board at the University of New England, effective from 4 February, 2013.

Nick Reid is a Professor of Ecosystem Management in the School of Environmental and Rural Science at UNE, and holds a Bachelor of Science Honours degree (1980) and PhD (1985) from the University of Adelaide. He has worked in natural resource management and applied ecology in overseas and Australian universities for 28 years, and taught a range of subjects including sustainable land management, ecological restoration, park and wildland management, agroforestry, ecology, and environmental impact assessment. His research interests broadly span the science, management and governance of social–ecological systems; biodiversity and ecosystem service assessment and management; integrating production and conservation; wildlife ecology and management, and forest protection. Current and recent research projects include the monitoring, evaluation and improvement of on‐ground investments in natural resource management; the social, economic and ecological impacts of wild canid management; the nature and value of ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes, the relationship between invasive native scrub and soil erosion and health, the impact of feral horses in wilderness, and profitable biodiverse wool production systems.

He was Director of UNE’s Newholme Field Laboratory from 1994–2000, Discipline Convenor of Ecosystem Management in the School of Rural Science and Natural Resources at UNE from 1999–2001, Co-Leader of Program 6 (The Environment) in the Australian Cotton Cooperative Research Centre between 2002 and 2005, and Deputy Chair of UNE’s Academic Board from 2011–2013. In 2012, he was appointed by the environment ministers of the Qld, NSW and Australian governments to chair the Technical and Scientific Advisory Committee of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area for 3 years. Previous NSW ministerial appointments include to the Narrabri–Coonabarabran–Coolah Regional Vegetation Committee (2000–2004) and the Northern Tablelands Regional Advisory Committee (2000–2006), which he chaired from 2004–2006.
