Professor Margaret Sims

Professor Margaret Sims is one of two members on Council elected by the Academic Staff in 2010 and re-elected in October 2012.

Professor Sims has worked in the university sector in Australia since 1992, with previous roles and work focus including Course Co-ordinator, course development, course restrutures and external course accreditations.  Professor Sims has been a Head of School, providing leadership throughout an AUQA review, change management and significant organisational restructuring.  Professor Sims has chaired and participated in Boards of Examiners meetings and has also worked as Head of the Centre for Social Research.  She has also worked closely in the mentoring of junior researchers.

Professor Sims has previously worked in the comunity services sector, developing and running community intervention programmes at local and national levels in New Zealand.  Her experience spans both residential and vocational services for adults with disabilities, community living for adults with disabilities, early intervention, child care and family support areas.  Professor Sims has been on the Board of Management of two different community service agencies.

Professor Sims has practiced as a clinical psychologist and a community worker at the practical and management levels - and maintains an extensive engagement in the children's services/integrated early childhood services profession.

Professor Sims' awards/achievements/special interests include:

  • Award for Excellence in Postgraduate Supervision from the Postgraduate and Honours Student Council of Edith Cowan University (ECU) (1996, 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2003 - with the award no longer being offered in 2004);
  • Achievement Award:  Early Intervention Australia, WA Branch, 2005;
  • Excellence in Teaching and Learning Award from ECU with Rose Williams and Lekkie Hopkins for Curriculum Development in the Bachelor of Social Science, 2006;
  • Award of Recognition WA Children's Week, 2007.
