This may be either in person or using information communication technologies (ICT), including video. The nature and extent of such consultation will be determined by the supervisors and the Head of School, after consultation with the candidate, prior to the commencement of each semester of candidature. 3. In order to acknowledge in a tangible way the achievements of those PhD candidates whose research thesis is judged independently and unanimously, by all three examiners, to be a thesis of excellent quality which should be passed without other than minor editorial amendments, an option has been included in the rules with effect for students graduating from 2011 to award the Doctor of Philosophy cum laude to candidates whose thesis is deemed by all three examiners to be of exceptional quality. |

|
| English Language Requirements for Admission Rule | 10 December 2009 |
This is a revision of the English Language Requirements for Admission Policy. There are only two substantive changes in this revision. One of these recognises the certificates issued by other universities warranting completion of recognised programs in English. The other removes a threshold requirement for admission to the English Advanced Program offered by our language centre. Course requirements that are above the minimum requirements set in this rule are now listed in an attached schedule. |
| Learning Resources Policy and Learning Resources Procedures | 2 November 2009 | This new policy and procedures provide principles for the management of all Learning Resources, as appropriate for flexible teaching and learning strategies. The policy will ensure that staff and students each know what the expectations are. The policy plays a role in the continuing process of standardising approaches across campus. |
| Registration of Higher Degree Supervisors Policy | 2 November 2009 | Revisions have been made to this policy, so that where Schools lack the capacity to appoint Principal supervisors to cover greater than 50% of the supervisory workload and where co-supervisors are available, Heads of School may appoint a Principal Supervisor at a less than 50% workload. In these circumstances the co-supervisor(s) must have completed supervisory training, have co-supervised a higher degree research student for at least one year and there must be mentoring available within the supervisory team. |
| Rules for the Degrees of Doctor of Letters and Doctor of Science | 14 September 2009 | These rules replace the Policy for Awarding of Higher Doctorates at UNE. The two major changes in this revision are the centralisation of the process, which will be controlled by the Pro Vice Chancellor (Research) and the reduction in the number of degrees from 7 to 2: Doctor of Letters and Doctor of Science. The rules provide that a descriptor can be added to the title so e.g. a historian or a lawyer can be awarded the Doctor of Letters (History) or Doctor of Letters (Law) and a chemist or a medical doctor can be awarded a Doctor of Science (Chemistry) or a Doctor of Science (Medicine). |
| Student Complaints Handling and Resolution Policy | 14 September 2009 | This new policy was developed by a working party of the Teaching and Learning Committee that was tasked with the creation of a policy and related documents that would underpin a centralised system for handling appeals and complaints, ensuring compliance with the national code and ESOS Standard 8 requirements concerning appeals and complaints. |

A minor change was made to the English Language Requirements for Admission Policy to transfer a delegation from the International Committee to the Teaching and Learning Committee. |
| Student Appeals Policy | 3 July 2009 |
The Head of School had no authority under the previous version to investigate the potential issues and make a decision whether to uphold the current assessment results or have a replacement assessment substituted. It is important that this decision should be based upon expert advice of disciplinary colleagues, including those outside the University. The previous version did not grant the ability to seek expert advice. |
| Assessment Policy | 1 May 2009 |
Inclusion of a new grade NC for those students who fail an assessment component that must be passed in order to pass the unit but whose overall mark is above 50. This amendment will take effect as part of the new Assessment Policy that will be implemented in 2010 |
| Extensions Policy | 1 May 2009 |
The previous version of the policy read:1. Period of extensions allowedCandidature and ScholarshipsAll requests for extensions are considered for a three month period for full-time students, and pro-rata for part-time students, and will not be recommended by the Committee unless extenuating circumstances prevail over which students have no control. In such cases procedures outlined below in 2. (i) – (iii) must be followed. It has now been changed to read:1. Period of extensions allowedCandidature and ScholarshipsAll requests for extensions are considered for a period of three months full time equivalent candidature, and will not be recommended by the Committee unless extenuating circumstances prevail over which students have no control. In such cases procedures outlined below in 2. (i) – (iii) must be followed. |
| Peer Review Policy-rescinded | 1 May 2009 | The policy was seen to create a procedural hindrance to the process, and development of mechanisms at a lower level (ie School) was seen as a better way to support the grant application process. |
|
Confirmation of Candidature |
2 March 2009 |
This policy has been refined following a consultative review of the existing policy and feedback from Schools. The changes made consist of editorial changes to ensure clarity of the intent and purpose of the policy and a change to the composition of the confirmation of candidature review panels to more accurately reflect the current organisational structure within Schools. |
|
Registration of Research Higher Degree Supervisors |
2 March 2009 | The Academic Board Higher Degree Research Committee was made aware of difficulties experienced by Schools in identifying staff who were eligible for appointment as principal supervisors under the current policy. As a result of consultation with Schools the policy has been expanded to articulate special cases/circumstances which allow Schools some flexibility in this respect. Other enhancements have also been incorporated eg linking registration with the Performance Planning and Review process and the addition of a requirement for new and inexperienced supervisors to undertake supervisory training. |
