Academic Board Operating Principles

The following are resolutions of the Academic Board on academic matters that are not covered by existing UNE policies.

FIRST DEGREES WITH HONOURS

The Academic Board approved the following operating principle which states UNE's minimum position on the size of the research component of an Honours degree:

That first degrees with Honours should have an identified research component of not less than 25% of the standard full year academic workload, to be eligible for use of the honours title.

Date Approved by Academic Board: 28 June 2004

UNITS OFFERED AT 100/400 LEVEL AND 100/500 LEVEL

Following advice from the Academic Board Teaching & Learning Committee, the Academic Board approved with immediate implementation:

That where units are offered at split levels, that the first number may not be separated by more than two digits (eg 100 and 300 acceptable, 100 and 400 level not acceptable).

NAMING AWARDS

The operating principle, Naming Awards, arises from discussions of higher doctorates at the 31st October 2002 meeting of the Standing Committee of Academic Board. Instead of forcing an across-the-board change in naming nomenclature for either professional doctorates or higher doctorates, Standing Committee felt that it would be better to establish a broader principle that no two awards, currently offered by UNE, have the same name.

Approved by the Academic Board: 25 November 2002
