Information for Parents
The Experience
Is University the right choice for your son or daughter?
Studying at university is a big undertaking. It takes considerable time, effort and money. Getting a degree isn’t easy but studies have shown, again and again, that the benefits – better career prospects, higher salaries and a greater knowledge and understanding of the world – are all well worth the effort.
Choosing the Right Course
To help make the right choices, students need to ask themselves:
- What are my academic strengths and weaknesses?
- What are my interests?
- Where will I study?
- What type of career interests me?
- What sort of job opportunities will I have after I’ve graduated?
Ultimately, the student’s career choices will be based on the same criteria as their study choices - the balance of what they enjoy and what they do well.
Choosing a course can be overwhelming, but there’s plenty of help at hand. Students should talk to teachers, careers advisers and parents; go to as many Open Days as possible, search the web and try to arrange work experience in the area they are considering. Refer to guides published by the Admissions Centres UAC and QTAC and UNE’s Courses to Career Choices, or visit our campus at any time. If you contact us in advance, we will try to tailor a tour to suit you. For more information please contact 1800 818 865.
Mode of Study
Students may elect to study on-campus or by distance, either part-time or full-time. The University of New England is internationally recognised for the quality of its distance education programs. Some units offered off-campus require students to attend compulsory residential schools at UNE. Details of residential school requirements are published annually on the UNE website.
Enrolment and Orientation
Once an on-campus student’s application for admission to UNE has been assessed and accepted, and offer will be made for on-campus study at the University.
From mid-December onwards, UAC and QTAC begin making offers to successful applicants. There are several rounds of offers. UAC and QTAC publish the offer timeline on their websites: www.uac.edu.au or www.qtac.edu.au.
Information regarding applications for distance education at UNE can be found at 'How to Apply'.
On-campus students enrol during Orientation. Students studying by distance will receive an enrolment form from the UNE Student Centre. Orientation for all new on-campus undergraduates is in February each year. This is their chance to check out the University’s activities, both academic and extra-curricular, and to discuss their individual course selection with academic staff. Introductory lectures are run during Orientation to give new students an insight into the academic expectations of their course.
On-Campus Accommodation
Residential Colleges
Living on campus ensures that students experience the unique UNE living and learning experience to the fullest – being at the hub of university life both academically and socially. Each of the seven residential colleges has its own unique character and heritage and a busy calendar of events. Regularly organised events include dances, barbeques, formal dinners, trivia nights and college balls.
Senior students are available to act as informal mentors and to provide support. When living in a residential college, there is plenty of opportunity to study and forge lifetime friendships.
Living on campus provides significant economic advantages. The fees cover everything including a fully furnished study/bedroom, food and cleaning. There are no utility bills, as heating, water and electricity are already covered. Students staying in a college only pay when the University is in session.
Self-Catered Accommodation
Wright Village provides individual furnished study/bedrooms accommodation in flats of different designs and sizes of four, six and eight bedrooms.
